Declines of fractions were widespread near the close. Vol ume was around 700,000 shares. A special offering of 19,000 shares of commercial investment trust at 411 was quickly ab sorbed but the stock backed away in subsequent regular deal ings. Childs Co. shares and bonds weakened when a petition for reorganization of the company was filed by creditors. Common wealth & Southern common came out' on one .20,700 share block, off 116 at I. . In arrears the greater part of the time were Southern Pacific, N. Y. Central, U. S. Steel, Beth lehem, General Motors, Good year, American Telephone, Philip Morris, Douglas Aircraft, Montgomery Ward and General Electric. Resistant was displayed by Hudson & Manhattan com mon and preferred, Santa Fe, Anaconda, International Har vester, Allied Stores, Standard Oil Oil), Texas Co. and West inghouse. Rail bonds enjoyed a spotty advance. E PRODUCTION SHOWS BIG 01 PORTLAND, June 18 (VP) Production of pine lumber duN ing the week ending June 12 increased nearly 10,000,000 board feet over the previous week, the Western Pine associa tion reported today. Orders were up more than 5,000,000 board feet and ship ments showed a slight gain. The figures, however, were far be low those of a year ago. Production of Idaho white pine, ponderosa pine, sugar pine and associated species for the week totaled 87,871,000 board feet as compared with 78,176,- 000 for the previous week and 98.841,000 for the correspond ing week last year. Similar comparisons of shipments were 78,386,000 feet, 78.300.000 feet and 99,803,000 feet; of orders. 86.886.000 feet, 81.596,000 feet and 106,232,000 feet. $14.50 downward; fairly active trade however on bulls with practical top weighty sausage offerings $14.50; light kinds $10.00-12.00; veaiers steady with week's decline, mainly $14.50-15.50; weekend trade on stock cattle dull; narrow. ROAD BOARD JAUNT SALEM, June 18 (fP) The state highway commission an nounced today its next meeting would be held July 6 and 7 in Portland, after which it would tour the state to discuss post war projects with county courts. CHICAGO, June 18 (IP) Grains moved within a narrow range today, but managed to dis play a firm undertone in an ex tremely quiet market. At one time wheat was up almost a cent, but selling later in the ses sion cancelled much of this gain. Oats and rye were ahead small fractions most of the day. There was an absence of news to influence price trends. Crop reports continued relatively fa vorable, causing some covering by traders who had previously gone short. The general disposi tion of most grain men, however, was to adopt a waiting attitude toward the market. At the close wheat was 1-1 higher, July $1,431, September $1.43 1-i, corn was unchanged at ceilings, July $1.05, oats were up 1-1 and rye was ahead 1-i. Exclusion Act Repeal Sought By Methodists PORTLAND, Juno 18 (.1') Re peal of tho oriental exclusion act was sought today by Oregon's Methodist women for all except the nationals of countries with which the United States is now at war. The Women's Society of Chris tian Service, meeting during the annual Oregon Methodist con ference, included In its resolu tion the hope that after the war "all orientals may be placed up on the same (immigration) basis as people from other sections of the world. Walls of Ancient Hotel Yield Strange Skeletons PORTLAND, Juno 18 (IP) Tho skeletons (figurative) in the walls of the old Glcnwood hotel make the work of tearing down tho old Tha Dalles lnndmnrk ex tremely interesting, E. C, Kru gor, Salem contractor, engaged in tho work, declared hero lust night. The old building, owned by Wasco county, was condemned. Krugcr wus tho only man to bid on tho wrecking Job. - In ono wall Krugcr found a series of secret shelves "prob ably used to hide whisky in pro hibition days." In another wall ho found a marijuana cache. Other odd gleanings from the walls of tho miciont building in cluded a minor's cundla holder. "Don't ask me how it got there," he commented. Under an old carpet Krugcr turned up a purse containing two railroad pay checks issued to Juan Diaz in 1931, one for $27.20 and one for $27.25. "I found out Diaz did not occupy tho room so I suppose the checks were stolen by a thief who was afraid to cosh them," said Kruger. Lumber from the building, erected in 1872, brings about $25 to $40 a thousand feet, Kruger said, and "folks are grubbing everything I salvage. There were about 100 windows. All of them have been spokon for. Heavy stuff down below sometimes runs 30 feet in length without a knot in it. It is just as sound as when it was installed in 1872."
