Transfers were in the neighbor hood of 1,500,000 shares. Persistently encouraging war news benefitted assorted favor ites in the peace category. Air crafts, and other armament is sues, while more or less indif ferent, displayed little real weakness. Business prospects and mild inflation thinking spurred a number of stocks. Holding in the "new high" ranks were Santa Fe, Montgom ery Ward, Sears Roebuck, Johns-Manville, Allied Chemi cal, Union Carbide, Du Pont, Dow Chemical, Westinghouse, American Telephone and Texas Co. Ahead most of the time were Bethlehem, Radio Corp., Kenne cott, J. I. Case and U. S. Rub ber. Backward at times were General Motors, Goodyear, Douglas Aircraft and American Smelting. Baldwin Locomotives certifi cates enjoyed a bur.st of strength when directors voted to redeem the : outstanding convertible 6 per cent bonds amounting to about $4,210,000 and declared a 75 cent dividend on the com-4. mon. The reaction was considered primarily tech nical. Activity was on a smaller scale than in other sections this week. After holding about steady most of the session, wheat slump ed in the last hour and prices fell below yesterday's finish;. Threat of a ceiling ' continued to act as a restraint upon trading, in the bread cereal. Oats eased to ward the close under scattered selling. Her husband has had to lay off from work at one of the Lake view mills, to take care of her as he ' had been unable to get anyone else. Her son, Private Shelby Lightle, is home on a 10-day furlough visiting with her and may get an extension on his time to be with and help take care of his mother. The Home Economics club met last Thursday at the grange hall with Mrs. Sadie Keller as hostess. The club meets every second and fourth Wednesday of each month and anyone is welcome to put in a quilt. Ten members were present and gin gerbread and whipped cream were served for refreshments. Plans were completed for the big shower on Mrs. Ray Bishop to be held May 29 and spon sored by the club. Next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Lil lian Reid. The Faris barber shop has been given a new interior coat of paint which brightens it up considerably. The shop will be open in the evenings only, from 7 to 9, and all day Saturdays to accommodate 48-hour week mill workers.
