(P) Decent sleeping quarter
for furloughed soldiers, problem
that has kept a lot of people up
all night because It hasn't been
solved in west coast cities, be
came a matter Thursday of offi
cial concern to the army.
Lieut. Gen. J. L. DeWltt, west
en defense commander and
head of the fourth army, asked
civilians to solve it.
"Procurement of sleeping ac
commodations for enlisted men,
while on pass for furlough, with
in large cities on the west coast,
Is a serious problem," said tho
general.
"Many hundreds of members
of the armed forces have been
unable to find any beds on Sat
urday nights In San Francisco
alone."
General DeWltt said It was a
responsibility of the public and
of organizations set up to serve
soldiers to provide a solution.
Ban On Silver

WASHINGTON, March 5 UP)
Senator McCarran (D-Nev.) said
Thursday an appropriation sub
committee voted unanimously to
strike from the $1,200,000,000
treasury-postoffice bill a house
approved amendment which
would withhold funds from the
treasury for the future purchase
and transportation of sliver un
der the 1934 purchase act.
McCarran said that all mem
bers of the subcommittee who
were present joined in the action
to eliminate the amendment,
which was adopted February 8
by a 204 to 104 vote in the house.
He predicted full committee
approval of the action, adding
that he was "certain" the senate
also would vote to kill the house
amendment.
Dismantling of
Ill-Fated Tacoma '
Bridge Nears End '
TACOMA, March 5 (P) Last
two wires of the two main cables
which formerly supported the
Tacoma Narrows bridge, were
Teeled in late yesterday in the
operation of dismantling - the
cables and towers and sell the
scrap steel for junk. Creeper
derricks for dismantling the
tower are on the job and In a
few weeks the only things left of
the unfortunate span that fell
after less than five months' serv
ice will be the piers in the Nar
rows and concrete anchors on ei
ther shore.

mantling contract with Grover
McClain, who erected the bridge
steel, in charge.
