Ursal haa been boxing and training in southern Idaho in readiness for tho AAU tournament to be held in Boston. But the army had ideas, too, so Ursal will leave Klamath Falls in a few days as Cadet Snapp, Snapp has had nine fights this season and has come out the victor nine times, WOOL MATTER Larry Reed, a one time star pivot man on the Merrill elev en, joined the navy reserve and went to the University of Ore gon . . . But the urge to see action got. the best of him and he applied for active duty. Lar ry left proudly for San Diego lfist week. We just saw Larry the other day and he is back from San Diego with a medical discharge because he is allergic to wool. SEEN IN UNIFORM Some of the well known ath letes of Klamath . county have returned from the armed forces for a few days . . . Seen- dur ing the week was Rollo Sheen and Keith Gentry ... both of these men are in the marine paratroops. Hollo played out standing football for Henley as Keith played for the Tulelake Honkers . . . Earl Abarr was home for a few days following a serious operation. Earl had his foot injured while playing football at Merrill and he may tven have to have a medical discharge. Jim Brown and George Dow of Keno are back from Corpus Christi . . . Both of these boys played for the Kena outfit. Riverside Victory Over Fremont Gives Them Undisputed Lead Riverside A victory over Fre mont at the high school gym Saturday gave them the ,top spot in the league. Fairview in second place will play River side in a one game playoff to decide the title. Riverside led by Redkey won ; from a stubborn Fremont five 42-8. Redkey, a second Hank Luisetti, scored 29 of his team's points. In another A game Roosevelt defeated Mills 30-14. Roose velt's victory placed Mills in the cellar part of the league. Lo per of Roosevelt was high point Roosevelt's 16-4. back by Fremont last Wednes day 16-11. Fremont played their best game of the season in downing the Teddies. Roosevelt B look undisputed lead in the B league when they defeated the previously unde feated Mills team 22-7. Roose velt took the lead at the start and was never headed. Thursday B game between Roosevelt and Fremont was an other victory for Roosevelt, 21-15. Roosevelt led during the entire game. Halt time score was 10-5. Mills won from Fairview in Malin Romped Over by Central Point 28-18 Malin Out of B League Running; LaClair Wanted To Play Powers Malin's coach, Joe La Clair, Is one disappointed man today be cause he couldn't send his quin tet against his home town team at Powers. Malin had a chance for con tending for the state B league hoop title but lost out when the Central Point team romped over them 28-18 at Mcdford Saturday night. If Malin had won. Powers would have been the next op ponent. La Clair claims tnai nis team could have beat Central Point but lacked sufficient tournament experience. "Maun came out on tne noor stiff as a board," La Clair claimed. Drazll usually comes off the maplewood with high point hon ors and this time he walked off with only one free throw behind his name. Ottoman lea witn only six tallies. Central Point was ahead from the first and stayed there until the final gong. The half time mark saw Malin trailing 16-17. This eliminated Malin com pletely out of the running and Central Point will play Powers probably at Grants Pass come next week. In Northern Oregon undeleat- Washington Takes Smith Tournament PULLMAN, March 1 (IP) The The University of Washington swimming team won the north ern division coast conference championships here Saturday, piling up 74 points to 61 for Uni versity of Oregon's defending champions. Washington State was third wth 23 points, followed by Idaho and Oregon with six each. Washington won six of nine firsts and Oregon State the other three. Faukerson Will Meet Volk in Headline Go PORTLAND, March 1 (IP) Ed Faukerson of the Pendleton army air base and Denny Quinn of Eugene, both former Golden Glovers, will feature the annual Rambler club amateur boxing card here tonight Faukerson will meet Bobby Volk of Portland in the headline bout. They are middleweights. Quinn, 132., will fight Wayne Riggin, 132, of Minnesota. USC Wins Southern Crown Wartime Basketball Comes To the End of 1943 Trail BERKELEY, Calif., March 1 (iP) Wartime basketball comes to the end of its 1943 trail next weekend after one of the tough est seasons in its history here abouts. Only the University of Cali fornia and Stanford are still play ing. They will meet at Berkeley on Friday and at Palo Alto on Saturday. Both are conference games but neither has a chance at the southern division title. Stan ford defeated the UCLA Bruins last Friday night to eliminate them as contenders and make the race safe for USC. The Bruins, although losing 41-60 to Stanford, didn't make their only 1943 northern trip for nothing. They defeated California Saturday night, 42-40. Don Barksdale, new Bruin star, and Forward Marvin Lee did most of the scoring against a Bear team weakened by enlist ments and the draft. The latter two factors already had wrecked some of the other bay district teams, which now have finished their seasons. War Time Baseball Favored by Poll SPOKANE, March 1 (IP) Ninety-eight per cent of the per sons who have written letters to the athletic round table on its wartime baseball poll favor con tinuation of the duration, the club reported this weekend after checking hundreds of letters. Among the two per cent min ority was H. J. Hartman of Cor vallis, Ore., who opposed the continuation and wrote 'every wartime baseball game is an other base on balls for the axis." Harry Wills Begins Annual Fasting NEW YORK, March 1 VP) Harry Wills, 51-year-old former Black Panther of the boxing ring, begins his annual month of fasting today. Wills, owner of two upper Harlem apartment houses, said he expected to lose about 30 pounds and that he goes on a month's hunger strike each spring "to burn the impurities out of my body." Durocher Rejected By Army Leo Disappointed far Failing Army Physical NEW YORK, March 1 (P) Leo (Tho Lip) Durocher, man ager of tho Brooklyn Dodgers, was rejected by tho army today because of. ta perforated ear drum.. Durocher, who will be 38 years old July 27, took his physical examination with a large number of other Inductees and afterward expressed disap pointment over failure to pass the examination. "I knew all along that my car- drum was perforated but I didn't know whether it was serious enough to warrant the army turning mo down," said Du rocher. "But they showed me right in the book where it was obligatory to turn down a man with such an ailment and that nothing con be done about it." Durocher said he would confer with President Branch Rickey of the Dodgers later in tho day probably tomorrow, to take up his duties as advisory coach at the United States military academy, The Dodgers are duo to report at Bear Mountain for spring training, March 15.
