SERIAL STORY THE TERRIBLE EYE BY EDWIN RUTT no throat cuttino chapter xiv 'THE working model of the Ter A ribla Eye did the Job. It cast upon the screen, hastily rigged up in the Taj Mahal, a series of pic tures. At the end of them, Hildy Charming gasped. ' "Jonah," she said, awed, "I'm on my knees. Who would have thought it? But..." She stopped suddenly. "Just why did you show me this, Jonah?" "Because," Jonah said, "I knew It would put you in control of the situation.. With what you know now, you can write your own ticket. And I . . . well, I just want you to have the the tilings you want, that's all." "You're a sweet guy, Jonah," Hildy said softly. "And I'm ever so grateful to you. It docs make everything just ducky." "Everything," said Jonah, In a voice like Charon mumbling to himself on the journey across the Styx, "for everyone except . . ." He bit it off. "Yes, Jonah?" "Oh, n-nothing," said Jonah. ' I 'HE small private race course on Mr. Channing's property yas doing business. The crowd was small, but select. It consisted of members of the Charming fam ily, the house servants, a squad of gardeners, grooms, hostlers and exercise boys. The only inhabitant of the estate not present was the gatekeeper. In addition to this distinguished company, there were two other spectators who were not con spicuous. Jonah Logan and Ma honey were viewing proceedings from the leafy seclusion of a nearby elm. Of all the laughing, gesticulat ing crowd at the track there was but one individual who did not appear to be enjoying himself. This was a little man, pacing turf distractedly and chewing the end of his mustache. Mr. Calvin Meggs still hoped for an 11th hour mir acle. An Imposing figure in heather colored tweeds detached itself from the crowd and bore down upon Mr. Meggs. "Well, Calvin," boomed H. L. Channlng, "I've been looking for you. A disquieting rumor has reached me. Is there any truth in the story that, for unknown reasons, your horse may be scratched?" Calvin Meggs did the Never-Say-Die school proud. "Not i word of truth," he said stoutly, tnougn hollowly. "I'm glad to hear It," Mr. Chan ging said jovially "Because, Cal vin, this race is to be run at ! " O'clock sharp or not at all. I'll grant no postponements, no rain- Ichecks. And I call your attention jto the fact that the time is now 12:40." I Mr. Meggs winced. i At that point a cry went up. A black horse, led by a small grin ning Negrc-Was approaching the track. Upon this beast Mr. Chan cing gazed like father upon son. ! "Look, Calvin!" he exclaimed rapturously, "Look, at Black Moonlight!" What hocks! What (withers!. Do you honestly believe tin your soul, Calvin, that that icaricature of yours could beat jhim?" I "Any day in the week," said ;Mr. Meggs steadfastly. "Includ ing Sunday." "Then bring him on," Mr. Chan nlng cried. "What are you wait ing for?" . Mr. Meggs was waiting for s miracle. He got it "Mr. Meggs, Mr. Meggs!" ishouted an excited voice from behind. I Mr. Meggs wheeled, In unison jwith Mr. Charming. They beheld Ithe gatekeeper hurrying toward them. The gatekeeper was lead ing a large bay horse. The horse had been newly clipped. "Found him wanderin' Just the other side of the road, sir," pant ed the gatekeeper, "an I . . ." But Mr. Meggs uttered a cry and fell upon the horse, like an end upon a loose ball. "Bucephalus,-my pet!" And then, sud denly, he recoiled. A bewildered ilook crossed his face. "That Is not my horse," he stated pos itively. "Come, come, Calvin," said Mr. IChanning, as the crowd collected, !"lf It isn't yours, whose is it? Someone found him, felt sorry for him and clipped him, that's all, 'Heaven knows he needed It." : "I still insist," Mr. Meggs said, "that this is not Bucephalus." ' "What makes you say that?" '- "I I don't rightly know," said Mr. Meggs vaguely. "It's his gen eral attitude. His er stance." Mr. Channing made a pahing sound. "Don't be silly, Calvin. You can't prove such a statement. Your horse had no distinguishing marks, had he, except that he looked like a neglected sheep." "He had a white left forefoot," Mr. Meggs pointed out. "So has this animal. No, Calvin, I see what you're up to. You would, of course, prefer that the race be called off, since you have cold feet Hence, you claim that this thli splendid specimen ol horseflesh is not yours. It's too thin, Calvin. Altogether too thin. Be glad you have any horse at all and let's get going." suing, "i qon't think it Is my norse. But, even so, I wouldn't oe surprised if jt could leave that uog oi yours at the feedbox." "Ha," said Mr. Channing. "We snail see. We shall see right wny. Ana ne stauted off, Wav ing his arms. : In the privacy of the elm Jonah jLogan spoke to Mahoney. "Ma honey," he said, "there's some thing here that I don't under- stand.1 I 'W it, said Mahoney. U'Uifty'ra gain' to Uie.post.".. eopvniaHr, i4s. NKA SCRVICI. INC. They were, indeed. The Jockeys hired for the occasion had mount ed and the horses were at tho barrier. Black Moonlight stepped around nervously, light as a cat on his feet. But Bucephalus, or his newly-clipped stand-in, waited Willi stoicism. His mien was tho mien of one who has all night. A few seconds passed. Then: "They're off," announced Ma honey. It was only a half-truth. Black Moonlight was off. Ho broke swiftly, picked up speed and seemed to flow toward the turn. Bucephalus, on the other hand, hunched himself a time or two like a dromedary setting sail for Da mascus and then stepped gingerly forward. He seemed to possess all the dash and Are of a coal barge. There then ensued a farcical horse race. By the time Buceph alus reached the turn, Black Moonlight was halfway around. When Black Moonlight rocketed into the stretch, Bucephalus was ambling placidly toward the half way mark. As Black Moonlight got home in a walk Bucephalus, had he been provided with a spy glass, could have seen the stretch. He was a sure thing to finish come Michaelmas. Around Mr. Channing the con gratulatory crowd gathered, like umbras of ancient Italy. Around Mr. Calvin Meggs no one gathered, save Hildy Channing. And Mr. Meggs wrung his hands and gave ; out pained, choking sounds. He j was doing these things when Hen- ry L. Channing, beaming at the i head of his legions, confronted him. I "Well, Calvin," said Mr. Chan- ! nlng, in a voice that would have been audible in Peru, "let this be a lesson.
