Si V-y - I Pittsburgh To Welcome New Coach After Year of Tough Grid Battles, Pitt Hires Famed Exponent of T Formation By MARBEN GRAHAM PITTSBURGH, Jan. 26 (IP) The University of Pittsburgh once mighty gridiron Panthers, licking the wounds from such defeats as 50-7 by Minnesota and 59-19 by Ohio State last year, welcomed today a new coach, Clark D. Shaughnessy, and his famed "T formation. The ' Pitts hadn't had such beating since they started to play football in 1904, not only .that but earlier, they had sent four teams to the Rose Bowl more than any other eastern college and even had one of their ag gregations turn down a trip to the west coast in 1937. The board of trustees last night unanimously approved a motion to hire Shaughnessy, with the full rank of professor. A veteran of 29 years coaching with Tulane, New Orleans, Loy ola, Chicago and Maryland, Shaughnessy is a graduate . of Minnesota. Jimmy Hagan, Pitt athletic di rector, explained he had picked out Shaughnessy when the ath letic board instructed him to get the "best coach available" to succeed Charley Bowser, who expects to be in the navy by the time his contract expires on March 15.' , But there positively will not be any change in our simon pure athletic policy," Hagan insisted. Shaughnessy -said he did not ask any change in the athletic setup. ... "I think Pitt has the proper ideals," he said, "I think it is fine to have good athletic teams. But I like to see the athletes come from the student body in a natural manner. Sell the school to the athlete, not hire .the ath lete is my idea. The new coach is expected to receive : between $10,000 and $12,500 a year. Bowser was re puted to have received $7500, Sutherland, $12,500. Injury Parts Fred Perry From Tennis SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 26 (7 Championship tennis and Fred Perry have parted company permanently because of an in jury to the former British Davis Cup star's right elbow. "I knew my arm would never be the same," he said. "I went out on top." Perry, now a staff sergeant at the army air forces base here, disclosed yesterday that he suf-: fered the . injury in Madison Square Garden, New York, on December 22, 1941. Now 34, Perry became an American citizen in 1940. He enlisted in the air forces- last December 12. Grant Mule Deer Face Starvation PORTLAND, Jan. 26 (rP) State game commission learned today that between 15,000 and 30,000 mule deer in Grant coun ty are threatened with starva tion this winter. - The report was made by Jim Eller, Malheur national forest supervisor, who said farmers favor reduction of the herds to a point where existing food sup plies will be "adequate. , Killing of the deer now while they are in good condition would alleviate the state's food short age, the farmers said. Deep snows in the Blue moun tains forced the herds down to concentration areas a month earlier than usual, Eller said, and surveys indicate browse will be 50 per cent short of the herds' needs. A hay shortage in the John Day valley prevents its use to tide the animals over, he said. Athletics Top Service List Over White Sox CHICAGO, Jan. 26 (IP) The Chicago White Sox, who have proudly held the No. 1 spot in the American league service list with 19 players in the armed forces, have had to surrender that position to the Philadelphia Athletics. A revised service list today showed the Athletics with 20 men working under Uncle Sam's colors. The Sox, however, have the honor of being the only American league club with a player in the marines Lt. Ted Lyons, veteran pitcher.
