Mrs. Everett R. Dennis, president of the league, presided. An Interesting interpretation and discussion of two Broad sides, league publication, was given by Mrs. Paul Buck. The first of the Broadsides took up " the subject of the Oregon State hospital and its needs for funds. Mrs. Buck explained why funds were so desperately needed, and what the state legislature is faced with in allowing these funds. She emphasized the necessity for far reaching and broadminded future planning rather than an unstudied pouring of funds into state institutions brought about by certain legislators who might start such a move for political prestige. . The second Broadside dis cussed by Mrs. Buck was on the subject of the Ruml plan for next year's taxes. She gave a lucid explanation of this plan with its problems and good and bad points. Mrs. Lena Dennis gave a pictorial outline of the county reorganization plan. A leg islative bill to be introduced at Salem this winter will be an enabling act allowing counties of Oregon to formulate re organization plans. At present, Mrs. Dennis pointed out, county officials are directly responsible only to the voter for the conduct of their offices. There Is no ex ecutive or head of county gov ernment. . If counties reorganize, and the county manager plan is put into effect, there would be three - distinct departments. First, all tax assessing and col- lecting bodies. , Second, pub lic health-and welfare groups, and third, the public works .and judicial departments, . all directly- respohsible to .the county manager. . County managership, ac cording to Mrs. Dennis, is a profession for which many are preparing.-A county manager can not afford not to be a suc cess, and therefore will not allow himself to be cluttered with politics and petty bick erings. In this, system, she ' continued, it is easy to put a finger on anything put of line without long ..and. expensive investigation... . People interested in the plan are urged to write legislators of this district asking them to consider it and to vote for.the enabling bill when It comes before the legislature. - Mrs. H. P. Bosworth closed the evening's program with a discussion of the merit system, a League project, which- will Society Seeks Funds Malin Lodge to Con tribute Toward Am bulance Purchase MALIN To assist with th nationwide program to raise funds for purchase of six equipped ambulances for tha US armed forces, the Malin ZBCJ lodge will sponsor ' a public card party, Wednesday evening, February the third, in the hleh school evmnanlum.
