DAY S MARKET STILL UNEVEN By VICTOR EUBANK NEW YORK, Jan. 8 UP) Re covery In today's stock market continued a matter of notable selectivity as many leaders fail ed to draw sustaining bids and slipped into the losing column. A few utilities, rails, farm im plements and mall orders gave a pretty good account of them selves after a slightly uneven start. Up to mid-day minor de clines and. advances were fair ly well split. Trends began to slip here and there after noon and, near the close, the direction was Irregularly lower. Sizeable blacks of low-quoted issues, in addition to a special 10,000-share offering of Lee Rub ber and Tire Common, enlarged volume. Despite intermittent sluggish stretches, .turnover for the full proceedings was around 800,000 shares. Closing quotations: American Can ..... Am Car Sc Fdy Am Tel & Tel Anaconda ....... Alvln Milton, president of the Quality Service, Inc., a filling station, was sentenced to serve one year in prison and he and the company he heads were fined $2000 today by Justice James P. Proctor for violating gasoline rationing regulations. Justice Proctor denied proba tion to Milton, who was indicted in November on four counts of violating gasoline rationing rules, because, he said from the bench, of "the magnitude of the violations and the widespread public interests involved" and because "substantial punishment, should be imposed in an effort to deter others prone to violate the rationing laws." . , . . Milton pleaded guilty. The maximum penalty provided by law would have been a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for one year on each of the four counts.
