Oregon's Gasoline
Consumption Falls
Off 9 Per Cent
SALEM, Dec. 26 (JP) Oregon
gasoline consumption decreased
by nine per cent during the first
11 months of 1942, Secretary of
State Earl Snell reported today.
A total of 250,018,636 gallons
was consumed during the' 11
months' period, bringing in a tax
to the state of $12,500,032.
Novemberwas the only month
of the 11 in which sales of gaso
line went higher than in 1941
presumably because motorists
were filling . their tanks just
ahead of rationing, Snell said.

Guadalcanal "has nany of the
same problems of supply and
reinforcements that contributed
to the defeat of, the .defenders
of Wake Island and Bataan, but
has the advantage of being near
to several United Nations South
Pacific bases, links in the sup-:
ply chain from America.
Australia, 1100 miles away,
and Hawaii, S000 miles, are two
main supply bases for Guadal
canal. The Japs as is usually the
case with the axis have short
er supply lines for the Battle of
Guadalcanal. From their main
production front in. Japan, it is
only . 3500 miles against ; our
75Q0 from the U. S. Even closer
at Truk the Japs have a
great supply base for naval and
land operations,. 1300 miles
away against our 6000 from
Hawaii. 4 , ' . ..
At close range, the Japs are
at Lae, New Guinea, 1000 miles
away: at Rabaul, New Britain,
650 miles; and at Bougainville,
Buka. and other .northern Solo
mon bases, all within 400 miles
of Guadalcanal,, .
It is these nearby .enemy
bases that are the targets of
swarms of allied, bombers oper
ating from New Guinea and
New Hebrides fields. U. S. fli
ers have also won air superior
ity over Guadalcanal,, but to
hold it must have reinforce
ments in fighter planes and
dive bombers as well as long
range heavy bombers.
The big jobs like Flying
Fortresses can hop. to Guadal
canal from Australia, New
.Guinea or New Caledonia eas
ily. But only Milne Bay, New
Guinea, and Espiritu Santo, our
New Hebrides base, are within
range of fighter planes carry
ing extra gas supplies. Other
wise it . is up to aircraft car
riers to bring in the smaller
planes.
To keep 'em flying, Guadal
canal's planes need oil and' gas,
ammunition and bombs all of
which must be -brought in by
vulnerable tankers and supply
ships.' These vessels must run
the - gauntlet in waters infested
by 'Jap - submarines and other
enemy naval vessels. Food and
ammunition for - the troops
holding 1 the . Guadalcanal air
field also come by sea.

are open, though long, and be
