HOLD-UP VICTIM DIES SANDPOINT, Ida., Oct. 28 V) Shot through tho chest when she defied a holdup man's order at her husband's night club soon after midnight Sun day, Mrs. Ruby Dew died at a hospital last night. The holdup man, August Hage, 34-year-old guard at the Farragut naval training station, was killed Mon day morning after he had shot and wounded a deputy sheriff who stopped his cur near here. The deputy sheriff, George O. Donnell, who was also shot through the chest, in the arm and the hand, was slightly bet ter last night. It Looks Like That Pound Of Coffee Every 5 Weeks Is the Most You'll Have WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 UP) Office of price administration spokesmen offered little hope Tuesday that the announced cof fee ration of one pound every five weeks for adults could be liberalized in the near future. The ration, effective after mid night of Nov. 28, was fixed only after careful consideration of the Imports expectable from future shipments, spokesmen said. Little margin was left between supply and anticipated demand, these officials who declined to be quoted by name, said, since it has been ascertained that about 02 per cent of all American fam ilies aro coffee users. This ap peared to leave little leeway for any subsequent adjustments based on failure of demand to ab sorb available supplies. Some coffee merchandising circles reported that 35 to 40 cups could be obtained from each pound of coffee. Luther Rcid, chief of rationing Informa tion, estimated 49, but even this figured out at less than 1 13 cups a day for every person over 13. The rationing was expected to spur a search for substitute bev erages which already is under way. These probably will not In clude tea or cocoa since black tea sales have been cut 50 per cent, green tea is virtually un obtainable, and cocoa consump tion has been cut 40 per cent. Rcid noted there was nothing to prevent a housewife from buy ing chicory and mixing it with coffee to stretch out the supply. In some parts of the country, notably New Orleans, coffee ready-mixed with chicory is commonly sold. The ration al lowance of such a mixture is the same as that for coffee that is, the chicory la counted as part of the ration. Processors have been experi menting for some time with such adulterants as toasted bran, rye, malt, Mexican chick peas, barley and other cereals.
