"Among the survivors were an unspecified number of British prisoners of war who were res cued," the dispatch said. Among old articles gathered In the drive was an old naval cannon from the Dorrls city hall grounds and a heavy fire bell discarded by the fire department after a new bell was purchased. The drive received a send-off at a school assembly Monday at which Mayor William G. Ha gel stein outlined the importance of metal salvage and Principal Don Doolin and Coach Harry Beck described the national scrap pro gram and its organization. Before the assembly was over the students were raring to get started at that moment, but Principal Doolin Induced them to wait until school closing time. Competition among the class es and the faculty added zest to the two-weeks campaign. The two groups gathering the least metal must fete the others with a dance and party.
