The Spokane fracas produced no scoring until the final 93 sec onds of play when the airtight defenses of both teams let up for just long enough to produce a spine-tingling finale. The Seattle squad went 75 yards nn two passes by former Oregonian Inky Boe to Del Owens for a tally but failed to convert when the try-out kick was blocked. At Portland, the heavy and crafty Oregon squad virtually swamped Vancouver with three tallies in the first quarter and then added a fourth in the sec ond after being forced back momentarily by a passing attack of the Warcos. Shortly before the half ended the Busters In tercepted a pass on the one-yard stripe to stop Vancouver's only scoring threat. The last half was quiet, with Portland scoring only once when it drove 71 yards in the final period. Both games were well at tended. L Chicago Cardinals Pace National Pro Football Loop; Powerful Bears Muss Up Eastern Army Eleven, 24-7 CHICAGO, Sept. 21 (JP) Silver-haired Jimmy Conzelman, coach of the Chicago Cardinal pro football team, sat down at the piano and ran his fingers over the ivory. "Didja ever hear our theme song?" he chirped, "it's called It's in the Cards,' and I'm going to play It and sing it because I'm a plenty happy guy." The good-natured Conzelman pounded out the melody In swing time and cheerfully bellowed the lyrics. All this joviality happened last night, after the Cardinals had beaten the Detroit Lions for the first time in 17 games. The score was 13 to 0, engineered on two touchdown passes by Bud Schwcnk after recovered fum bles had set" them up. The 1942 championship comes to Sacramento after flirting with the State ' Capital club through 14 years.- In 1928 the team tied with San Francisco but lost in the playoff. In 1937, the ytar that post-season play offs determined the champion ship, the Senators ended the regular schedule in first place by a four-game margin. By 1940 the fyear "before Martin came, the team had lost its spark -and finished down in fifth place. Last year Pepper kept it on top of the standings for 25 weeks, but in the final seven days the remainder of what was once a 16 game lead to Seattle had disappeared. This year the Solons lost 14 of their first 20 contests to re pose in last place. Then they took the lead . away from Los Angeles on June 13, only to lose it a month later, July 16. After that they stayed in sec ond place until yesterday the day that counted. Yesterday San Diego nailed down its upper division fourth place spot by taking the single game it needed from San Fran cisco to avert a tie, and an ex tra one for good measure. The scores were 12-4 and ' 1-0, and left San Francisco behind the Padres by three games. Elsewhere Oakland twice de feated Seattle 4-0 and 10-5, while Hollywood split with Portland. The stars won. the first game 1-0 and the Beavers triumphed 7-3 in the nightcap. The league's Shaughnessy playoffs begin tomorrow with S e a t tl e meeting Sacramento. Detroit M Br JUDSON BAILEY Auociatid Press Sports Writer The struggle for the National league pennnnt has now been re duced to the point where St. Louis can clinch it with any combination of five victories of their own or five defeats for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Since the Cardinals hnvo six games left to play, thnt means they can lose one of them and still win even though the Dod gers capture all seven of their remaining tussles. The best Brooklyn could do against the futile Phils yester day was halve a doubleheader and all that saved them ' from winding up even deeper in the rut than their present 21 games was a truly great pitching per formance by Claude Passcau. The ace of the Chicago Cubs pitched a five-hit 3-0 shutout against the Cards in the second game of a doubleheader for his 19th victory after the Cardinals' Morton Cooper had given the Cubs a four-hit 1-0 whitewash ing. Cooper's feat came in an air tight duel with his former team mate, Lon Warneke, who scat tered seven safeties but was de feated on a double steal which brought Johnny Hopp home in the fourth inning. This was the 100th triumph for the Card inals and Cooper's 21st. Brooklyn was beaten in the first game 7-3 and the defeat was all the more humiliating because Whitlow Wyatt, the . Dodgers' No. 1 star, was knocked out in less than four innings when Danny Litwhiler and Nick Etten hit home runs, the latter with two aboard. Credit for the vic tory went to Tommy Hughes. Buck Newsom, self-styled pen nant insurance for the Dodgers, pitched six-hit ball to win the nightcap 4-2 and kept Brooklyn's pennant hopes from dying. .
