"If they satisfac torily succeed, it will be in spite of difficulties, because diversion ot travel to highways caused a sharp reduction In cars available tor passenger-carrying by rail. "incomplete data indicate that passenger traffic (passengers car ried one mile) had begun in May to exceed all previous records The previous May record made in 1920 was 3 billion 800 million passenger-miles, while the traffic in May, 1942, apparently exceed ed 3 billion 900 million passenger-miles. In 1920, when travel by rail was the largest in historv. It amounted in the first five months to 171 billion passenger miles, while in the first five months of 1942 it was about 16 13 billion. "The Increase in passenger train speeds has helped accom plish these increases in service; but much more than increase in speeds has been necessarv. Lnwi. motives and cars must be kept moving more continuously than ever, and the number of cars per train aas naa to be increased. Average revenue passengers per car increased 27 per cent in the first quarter to 18.4 passengers; but, as this figure shows, most cars have not been crowded, al though there has been some crowding in territorltles having we largest traffic increases. "The railways thus far havo done a good job in handling the nugeiy increased traffic. Love had been third alternate among Pierce's nominations. Everett E. Love is Eugene Love, KUHS graduate of last spring and prominent in sports and scholarship achievement at the local school. Los Angeles Navy Station Enrolls 25,000th Recruit LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 ftp) The navy recruiting office here enrolled its 25,000th recruit since Pearl Harbor Thursday a record which Lt.-Comdr. Previously, the only stipula tion had been that wives of naval officers could not be appointed to the Women's Reserve. He sailed with a recent convoy from an American port. Smith Graduated from "Klam ath union high school in 1939 and was employed at the high school until his enlistment in the navy on May 23, 1942. He spent two years at Oregon State college. Bear Gets Home In Portland Zoo PORTLAND, Aug. 7 (P) A 25-pound Russian brown bear was in its new home at the Washington park zoo today, the gift of soldiers at the Portland port of embarkation. The four-month-old cub made its way to this country as cabin mascot on a Russian frplchtor It was given to the soldiers, who kept it two months and then looking into the future declripH it belonged where It would not pe ine major project for all nanas.
