From the start shifts generally were in minor fractions either way. Few weak spoU were in evidence in tho closing hour and modest plus marks were well distributed. Transfers were around 230,000 shares, A wide assortment of indus trial corporation reports stress ing declining profits in the fust half seemingly had been taken Into account by financial contin gents. In tho stock division Santa Fe repeated its performance of yes terday by edging Into new high ground since 1038. Other Usuus getting support were Southern Pacific, N. Y. WHEAT CHICAGO, July 28 '(Ph-War news from the Russian front and anti-inflation activity In Wash ington combined to depress grain prices today. Wheat dropped about a cent. Price Administrator Leon Henderson conferred at th White House with President Roosevelt, presumably on th administrator's program to com bat rising prices, but traders re mained in the dark as to the ex tent of that program and its ef fect on agricultural commodities. Wheat led the downturn, and, although sporadic attempts wera made to rally the market, prices were never able to get back to the preceding session's close. A further break in cotton added to the uneasiness in grains. The close was at the day's lows. Wheat finished off 1-11 cents, September $1.17I-$1.18, December $1.211-i, and corn was down 1-3 cent, September 891 I. Oats fell 8-1 cent, rye de clined i-i cent and soybeans were unchanged to 1 lower. We were told in the last wat "Destroy the Kaiser first and discuss peace afterward." We went to the peace conference in 1919, animated by the loftiest and the most distinguished ideals, but we were totally un prepared for the gigantic ac actualities that had to be met at the peace table. In result we se cured neither freedom, nor prosperity, nor 'justice nor peace. Herbert Hoover. BUSINESS - . - :".: i.v..il.-w..w. " " -"wS
