Forty-seven Oregon cities Issued
building permits authorizing
$1,610,700, of construction In
May, an increase of 00.8 per cent
over tho $033,007 reported by
the samo cities for 'April, It was
revealed Friday by Lloyd M.
Faust, roiearch associate In the
bureau of business research at
the Unlvorslty of Oregon.
The entiro Increase was due
to permits for defense housing
in Portland, which accounted for
OS per cent of the total permits
Issued. The other 40 cities issued
permits with total valuation
of .only $108,300, a decrease of
71 per cent as compared with the
already low level of April, Faust
aid.
Permits for new residential
construction totalled $1,287,423,
an .Increase of 100.1 per cent
over April; new non-residential
permits were $200,887, a de
crease of 40.3 por cent; nnd per
mits for additions, alterations
and repairs were $131,408, a de
crease of 20.3 per cent.

mission announced yesterday it
was in dire need of qualified
social workers, but refused to re
instate a former county adminis
trator on the ground ho was a
conscientious objector. -
The commission rejected the
applicant, who said he objected
to military service because of re
ligious beliefs, despite- the fact
workers are needed so badly
that present employe who fail
ed to pass merit examinations
will be retained at least tompor
