In the meantime the old "Third Oregon" was broken up nnd tho members sent to the various divisions. Sturr wus sent to Montdldlcr, where ho wus busy taking replacements to the First division. There wero lots of "gas casualties" about that time, Sturr remembered. At Scvcrgne, Starr was on liuison duty with the Second division. Ho wns In tho Chateau-Thierry offensive and wus hospitalized at St. Aglnon until after the Armistice. Rsturns to U, S, Starr returned to tho United States In March, 1010, rosumed Ills studies and finished law ut Northwestern. In 1020, Starr went buck Into tho service and served with the national guurd as commanding officer. Several years Inter ho went Into tlio re servo corps as assistant unit in structor for tho 381st infantry with tho rank of captain. Ho continued with tho resorves nnd took his physical examination In January for active duty In the present conflict, but this week was advised thnt he could not bo accepted duo to World Wnr dis utility nnd was duly discharged. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was organized In 181)8 lor the benefit of tho men in the Spanish-American war. Sixteen years ago, Starr became interested in VFW and seven years ago was named department Judge advo cate. Sinco that time he has gone through the various offices until his election at Bend last year to tha highest station of department commandor. Starr Is a member of tho Portland guard und putrol, hus worked hurd since December 7, 1041, to havo his committees Jn tha VFW orgunlziillons prepared for emargency, and Is confident Hint American team work will win the war.
