Immediately In need of pro-' tection are three large wood working plants whose produc tion Is now largely in the Inter est! of the war program and whose raw muterluls come chief ly from custern Linn county, plus a score of lesser Industries which are processing foodstuffs produced by farmers of the rich Albuny agricultural area. Aware of thoir responsibili ties, the people of Albany have turned out In a big way for civil- dn defouso work. Meanwhile, l.-y aro laying the foundation iilso for projects to enhanco the welfare of soldiers at nearby C'limp Adair. For civilian defense tasks, more thun 3000 residents of Al bany -men, wome.i and older buys and girls have enrolled, apd nearly all have been assign ed to duties varying from sew ing to policing. More Important departments of tho program have absorbed defenso workers as follows: Civil air patrol, headquarters at the Albany municipal airport, engaging 70 men and women, in cluding a score or more of li censed pilots. Police roicrvra. encompassing 1 10 active members, who In their last test turned out 00 strong, ffeh at his post, in 28 minutes. Stale guard unit, newly organ ized, with 65 members. Air raid wardens, numbering 272, all active. Fire wardens, 75, and fire watchers, 30, all thoroughly re hearsed. Air ruld warning service, cen tering ut- Albany, Involving 40 warning board watchers besides administration staff for the en tire county. Rod Cross ambulance corps, Including 30 panel dollvcry trucks available for emergency use u ambulances. Transport corps, now includ ing 30 emergency trucks, still In procesa of organization.
