Blackout Trial
Held Successful
In Lake County
LAKEVIEW Although Lake
county's blackout last Sunday
evening was declared an almost
unqualified success by the local
defense council and reserve po
lice, a meeting was held Tues
day evening to discuss problems
arising from blackout conditions,
according to Elzie Baglcy and
Fred Reynolds, who are in
charge of emergency "police ac
tivities under the direction of
state police and local officers.
The wholehearted cooperation
of the community, with only a
few exceptions, was stressed by
committee members reporting at
the uuesday evening meeting.
A meeting of the police re
serve committee heads will be
held this week to adopt a simpli
fication of blackout regulations.

while their mother was shopping
claimed the lives late yesterday
of two small Tacoma children
despite efforts of two high
school students to rescue the)
tots.
The elder child, Janice Mo
Gruder, 3, was apparently at
tempting to drag her 14-month"
old brother, Joe, toward an
exit when she was overcome
by smoke. Battalion Fire Chief
Clyde Jenkins said after find
ing the two bodies huddled to
gether. Two youths who saw smoke
pouring from the window of
the home were driven back by
the heat when they attempted'
to enter the house. An over
heated stove was blamed for thai
blaze. The mother, Mrs. Ellen.
McGruder, and two older chil
dren survive. .
