The Indians were stopped by the aging Lefty Grove, who finally achieved his 300th major league victory. 70,000 Fingerlings Planted In Cascade Mountain Lakes Planting of approximately 70, 000 fingcrling Irout in romotc mountain lakes along the Cas cade divide was completed this week, It wa announced Satur day by the headquarters of the Rogue River national forest, de partment of agriculture. Tho work was done principal ly by the State Game commis sion, with tho forest service co operating by furnishing pack mules and assistance In the pack ing. The fish from the state hatchery at Klamath Falls, are from one and a half to two Inches In size, and are carried In metal cans In water which is carefully regulated to the tern- I peraturo In which the fish thrive. The lakes stocked are In two groups one In the Mountain Lakes wild area east of LBke 0' the Woods and tho other in the Seven Lakes basin, both within the Roguo River national forest. PAUL, Minn., July 26 (UP) Jimmy Thomson of Chi copee, Mass., the game's longest hitter, and two golfing un knowns mastered par by five strokes Friday to take tho 18 hole lead in the 72-hole St. Paul open golf tournament, With Thomson at 67, ahead of a field of topnotch profession als in the raco for $7500 in prizes, were Joe Coria, St. Paul, and Gene Battistoni, Norwood Park, III. One stroke back with 68 were Ralph Guldahl, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., two time national open winner, and Light Horse Harry Cooper, who has won the tour nament three times for $8604 in prize money. At the end of the sweltering day, Ben llogan, Horshey, Pa., the season's biggest money win ner and top favorite, could post no better than 70. Klamath Falls' Pelicans, eye ing the second half Oregon State Baseball league title, Sunday en tertain the Toledo Mud Hen In a loop contest at Recreation field starting at 2 p. m., in an attempt to post their third second round victory in four starts at the ex pense of the basement outfit. The Mud Hens, apparently strengthened from their early season performances, may give the locals a real battle. Last week at Toledo the Hills Creek Hill Billies had to go 10 innings before squeezing out a 6-4 win over the coast club. In the sea son's opener two months ago the Billies had an easy time with the same team, blasting out a 13-1 triumph with no trouble at all. Pitcher Eagleson, who allowed the Pelicans only seven hits in losing a one-run game in first half play, may take over the mound duties for the visitors Sunday afternoon although the invading nine has another ca pable hurler.in Les Anderson. Catcher Ball, who collected three of the seven hits off Pitch er Clyde Carlstrom in the two team' first meeting, may get the starting backstop assign ment. He has 13 safe blows, including three home runs, in 34 official trips to the plate in State play and has batted in 12 tallies, one of the best marks of any player in Ore gon semi-pro activity. Men's doubles teams fought the bitterest battles yesterday in the semi-final bracket. Jack Gur ley and Emery Neale, playing as the Stanford number two doubles team, took three and one half hour to beat Harold Wag ner, San Francisco, and Charles Hunt, Seattle, 2-8, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
