Retired (Copyright. 1941. by United Press President Roosevelt's action In occupying Iceland with our armed forces has brought us a long step nearer to "shooting war" with Germany and her allies. Most naval experts, I believe will agree that It is an inevitable move made necessary by the steps that went before It, chief ly tho president's public an nouncement that we will deliver supplies to Great Britain by whatever means we may con sider necessary. Whatever the political aspects and repercussions of the move, our navy Is well prcpured to carry out its sharo of the task We have ample surface craft and naval airplanes to keep open the sea lanes from tho North American continent to Iceland and apparently began making dispositions necessary for the task some weeks ago. That the navy, and its marine corps, will assume tho bulk of tho burden seems certain. Just how they will do it, of course, is a secret but any naval student can envisage certain aspects which will bo as obvious in Berlin as In Washington. First, it seems certain, trans ports will land a large number of marines who have been espee ially trained and equipped for Just such problems. These units immediately will begin taking over from the British with whom they probably will be brigaded for a time until they have fa miliarized themselves with con ditions and obtained all the in formation tho British wcro able to assemble. Tho number of British troops on the island Is not known but It has been estimated at from 30,000 to 60.000. American staff headquarters undoubtedly already have been set up In tho Iceland capital Reykjavik, and normal patrol operations of the vast area of the north Atlantic between Iceland and the North American coast line have been Intensified. In addition to the surface patrol, of course, aircraft will be used including the long-range bombers which our navy has developed and which have been found extremely efficient. The problem will be to pre vent German attacks on any of our ships, and possibly on Brit ish shipping also, within the area of operations which in cludes the enormously busy sea lanes from New York, Boston, Halifax and other ports to Ice land and tho British isles. From the wording of Wash ington's announcements It would appear that eventually we will take over from the British the bulk of the transport problem between North American ports and Iceland. That will be a task of the first magnitude and will involve the uso of scores of ships and thousands of planes including those which must be based on Iceland for defense of the island in accord with our pledge to the Icelandic govern ment. That the Germans will permit us to operato ships freely be tween North American ports and Iceland is, of course, extremely unlikely. Mass Plane Output Seeks Quality By DEVON FRANCIS SEATTLE, July 8 (Tho Special News Service) Unliko the Ger mans, tho United States is aim ing for mass-scale production of military airplanes without any sacrifice of Intricate mechanisms which insure high-grade per formance. Studies of German military airplane show they are being made with the utmost simplicity of design. It permits their fab rication by semi-skilled or even unskilled workmen. The goal is volume production. German air force command ers use aircraft as commanders of ground arms use Infantry. Tho men and the equipment are expendable, as they were in Crete, if tho objective is worth tho loss. I have been told that German airpluncs were so simple that any backyard mechanic could take them apart and put them together again by following the instructions painted on engines, bodies and wings. Some British officers, exam ining a captured German plane, were puzzled by foot high let ters and numurals on the side of the fuselage until it suddenly dawied on them that the mark ings were merely to indicate what kind of gasoline the ma chine used- American military planes are a contrast. They, are complex mechan isms, and the manufacturing of tnem in the last decade has be come a fine art. Engines are sturdy but intricate. Miles of "plumbing," having to do with operation and performance, snake through the structure of a bomber. No half-trained pilot can fly an American fighter. The goal of this country is to retain the essential features of a complicated mechanism with out sacrificing spocd of produc tion. It is installing in big fac tories like Boeing's Seattle plant machines designed to simplify the job of the individual work man and increase his output.
