The committee will also un dertake to expand the school lunch program throughout the state, which is now reaching only 19 per cent of Oregon's schools, according to the re port of a subcommittee headed by Mrs. Mabel Mack, extension nutritionist. Only 12 per cent of the Oregon schools are mak ing use of the surplus food products made available by the the federal government. Shortage of Farm Labor Felt Over Oregon, Report Increased shortages of farm luborcrs are being felt through out tho state, reports indicated Monday. While more carloads of mi grant farm workers poured through Klamath Falls from southern California farm secur ity camps to north state straw berry patches, a call was sent out from Nyssa and Ontario, Ore., for beet workers and onion thinners. The announcement said ap proximately six months work would be available. Prospective workers will be housed in tents in farm camps but must have their own bedding ai.J cooking utensils. Washing and toilet facilities will be furnished. Meanwhile a demand for strawberry pickers still existed. HICKS TO LEAD On Wednesday evening, May 14, at the Fremont school at 7:30 a local district training committee under the leadership of Joe Hicks will put on a one night training session for all scoutmasters, troop committee men, district committeemen, and fathers of the Scouts. Assisting Hicks will be Rev. Victor Phillips, who will discuss the history of scouting, Howard Boyd who will lead the songs and games, Dwight Gilchrist who will discuss the program. Dem onstration of actual scouting will be put on by the boys of different ranks. In sending a letter, the aver age cost to the government is 1.7.1 cents. UO Medical School To Increase Quota PORTLAND, Ore., May 13 (UP Tho University of Oregon medical school will admit ten more students than usual this year to help meet the pressing need for doctors. Dr. Richard B. Dillchunt, dean, announced here Monday. Dr. Dillehunt said the school Is increasing its enrollment at the request of the association of American medical colleges. The school's maximum enroll ment upder the present budget Is 250 students. A scries of county meetings 1 to explain the provisions of the j national referendum on wheat ; quotas were scheduled through- out Oregon from May 12 to 17 i by the state office of the AAA. ! County and community commit- j teemen will take the informa lion obtained from state offi cers at these meetings and will pass it on to wheat farmers In general at community meetings to be held between now and the referendum date, May 31. Approval of wheat quotas proclaimed on May 10 by Sec retary of Agriculture Wickard, in accordance with the 1938 law, is vital to the future wel fare of Oregon commercial wheat growers, believes Will Steen, Umatilla county farmer and chairman of the state com mittee. Unless the marketing quota plan is approved by two thirds of those voting, the gov ernment loan program will be discontinued. Under the quota plan any grower who has stayed within his wheat allotment un der the AAA program can mar ket his crop the same as usual with no restriction. Polling places for the refer endum will be arranged by each county committee.
