Already, although Hoodoo hai been In operation only two yeara, the forcal service lini plant to duplicate It In other parta of the United State. No Connotation Veteran skiers call Hoodoo the no mo hot no omlnotii conno tation one of America's best natural bowli. Cupped In the summit of Oregon'! Cascade mountains. 4800 feet above sea level on the Santlum highway Unking Bend and the Willamette valley, It hut a four-month aea on. from December through March. Hoodoo wii conceived by J. R. Drurkart, Willamette national forest aupervlaor, and Hangar Bud Burgos aa a glorified com munity pluyground. Tho United States forcat service, which auth orized the construction, carried ut the plan. Adults as well as youths from towns and furms more than 100 mllei away flock to Hoodoo de spite attractive snowy slopes right next door. Why? Because even a thin pocketbook will yield enough coppers for a weekend at Hoo doo. This Is how It works: Hoodoo lodge Is required to furnish dormitory bunks, with mattreaset, (or SO cents a night to skiers bringing their own bed ding. Youth groupa, youngatera under IS years of age who come In chaperoned parties and bring their own blankets, are given bunks for IS cents each. Breakfast 40 Cents The lodge has a limited num ber of bunks requiring no addi tional bedding available for a dollar a night the top price. , In the lodge dining room, j hYeakfaats range upward to a : maximum of 40 cents. Lunches and dinners coat from 20 to 63 cents. Youth groupa making advance reaervatlons are fed and lodged for one dollar a day per Indivi dual and adults who stay by the week receive a flat rate of ten dollars. Hoodoo lodge, a massive log stockade structure finished In side with rough lumber, cost the forest service only $2300 for ma terials. Civilian conservation corps labor erected It and built furniture. In the lodge are basement dormitories (or men and women, a large dining and living room, quarters (or the forest ranger and akl patrol. Waxing Room A separate building, attached to the lodge by a covered passage way, provides overflow space for additional bunks or dining, as needed. In It youngsters are in vited to play the Juke box and t any time. Still a third building houses ski waxing room stovc-hcated for easy spreading of wax and equipped with work benchos and vices (or ski repairs. Three-fourths of a mllo away long the backbone of the Cas cades Is tho bowl, reached by an old car rigged with endless tracks to combat fresh snow, or by another car towing a bobsled after the snow la packed. The car service costs 40 cents round trip and gets little play from the boys and girls, who would rather ski to the bowl and spend their money on tows. By FRED HAMPSON Associated Press Staff Writer The younger generation in ten nis are too intent on the spec tacular and too careless of the fundamentals. So said Big BUI Tilden, one of the games most spectacular (In his day and even yet) and at the same time one of thc most orthodox of courtmen. Tilden played a couple of sets with Don Budge In Portland last weekend. His legs are gone and his rifle-ball service Is memory, but when he gets up to the net you see flashes of the old tlckery. "Trouble with America's young players," said Tilden be fore going out for his evening licking, "is their yen to pull fan cy strokes and shots before learning fundamental tennis. Sabln Is an example. He never achieved a sound basic game by endless practice. He's flashy, but a great player like Budge would slaughter him. "A lot of the kids lack tem per. I've no use for a young ster who won't get mad. Not mad at himself mad at his op ponent. You can't fight your self in this game. But It pays to get mad at thc guy across the court. More often than not you'll beat him. "Will I get sore at Budge to night? Say I think it was at Memphis I quit getting mad at Donald. It's just 20 years too late."
