M., In behalf of the assemb led Masons, expressed their appreciation for the evening' entertainment, and mentioned that two emblem were com mon to both organization and present at all the meet ing, namely, the open Bible, and the flag of the United State of America. Mr. Florence DeMerrltt, worthy matron of Prosperity chapter of Mnlin, and seven of the Malin chapter were pre ent. Mr. DeMerrltt wa escorted to a seat of honor In the east. At the conclusion of the program refreshment were erved In the downstairs din ing ball, by a committee under the direction of Mr. E. S. Henry. Table decoration and arrangements were under the direction of Mr. Leo N. Huls, and were very effective, long atrlpa of deep blue cellophane, allvered now flowers, and low, red candles moulded In cup shape, were used In the arrangement. Defense Is Club Topic Informative Talks Giv en at Toastmistre.ss Club Meeting Said Mr. W. R. Boyd at the dinner meeting of the Toast mistress club at Mr. Nord'i tea room on Monday evening, "We should help Great Brit, ain In every possible way, short of war. Wo should re main calm and not become hysterical because a few loud spoken men shout for war." The dinner topic for discus sion, "To what extent should the United States aid Great Britain," was presided over by Mrs. G. Lagan Black as toastmistress. A few members felt that tills country should give unlimited and whole hearted support, quoting Wins ton Churchill's remark, "We are fighting by ourselves alone, but not for ourselves." Mrs. Anne Price expressed the opinion regarding the de fense program that congress should not abdicate the power invested in it. Mrs. Hiram F. Murdoch reviewed tho lease lend bill, giving the provision of tho bill, and commenting on the unlimited power that Would be transferred to the president. At the installation of the neve officers, the members were reminded of the article of the bylaws of the club, which slates that all officers shall rotate until each office shall have been filled by each member. In accepting the office of president, Mrs. Walter Brown spoke of the honor accorded her as well as the responsi bility of being the leader of a young, progressive organiza tion with tho high alms of the Toastmistress club. Briefly, members reviewed the gains of the past six months and were told by the Installing officer, Mr. W. H. Hlbbard, that it I not in "arriving" but In "striving" that true progress is made. In structions were given In the correct technique used In preparation of a talk. "You have no right to ap pear before your hearers with a speech that Is Ill-prepared," aid the club critic, Mrs. Hlb bard, In alresslng the Impor tance of careful preparation. Members then gave short talks on "The March- of Dimes," Illustrating points gained. THIMBLE CLUB ELECTS OFFICERS AT MEETING The Thimble club of Neigh bors of Woodcraft met Tues day afternoon, January the twenty-eighth, at the home of Mr. C. O. Dryden on North Eleventh street with Mrs. Mary Blackstone as co-hostess. Five tables of pinochle were In play following the businesa meeting with high score going to Mrs. Nina Beck, second high to Mr. Anna Bean and low to Mra. Ingeborg Wilker ion. Organization Plans Dinner Annual Birthday Affair Announced for Feb ruary Twenty-fifth Women of the Moose met Tuesday for a buainess session presided over by Mrs. Mabel Ward, senior regent, when plans were made tor the an nual birthday turkey dinner for members of the chapter and their husbands or escorts to be held on February the twenty-fifth. Mrs. Mildred Wilkinson was na.ncd as chairman of this affair. Miss Marcea Dixon was ap pointed publicity chairman for the remainder of the year and Mrs. Dora Buchanan was in itiated into the order. The next meeting was announced for February the eleventh at even o'clock to be followed by a pinochle party at eight o'clock. The Graduate Regents met at tho home of Mrs. Mabel Ward Wednesday afternoon when pinochle followed the dessert hour. High score was held by Mrs. Belle Tompkins and sec ond high by Mrs. Fannie Thompson. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Annette Hall on February the twelfth. An Alumni breakfast will be held in the KC hall on Sun day morning at nine o'clock when all members are ur&ed to attend. ' The Ritualistic committee will meet Monday at half past seven o'clock at the home of Mr. Virginia Babcock, 2320 Darrow street. Members of the lodge spon sored a publie pinochle party Friday afternoon in the KC hall when Mrs. Rita Fuller received the award for high and second went to Mrs. Hilda MBtheson. DISTRICT MEETING OES SCHEDULED MERRILL With the dis trict meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star to be held in Klamath Falls February the twenty-eighth, and Ma lin, Merrill and Tulelake chapters to take part, plans for the affair were discussed at the social club meeting held last week at the home of Mrs. Homer Heaton. Mrs. Hallie Huntington of Eugene, worthy grand matron, will be present. On February the seventh the Malin chapter will hold a school of instruction dur ing the afternoon with Mrs. Fay Ambrose, Portland, dis trict deputy associate grand matron to be present for the afternoon session and the reg ular meeting In the evening. EXTENSION UNIT MEETS IN ALTAMONT The Altamont Extension unit met at the home of Mrs. Ralph Benoist, 4709 Bisbee street, Tuesday, January the twenty-first at ten o'clock, under the direction of Mrs. Winnifred Gillen, home dem onstration agent, who gave a very Interesting and instruc tive lecture on "Weight Con trol." Members were weighed and informed as to whether they were over or under weight, and instructed as to correct ways of losing or gaining as their particular case called for. At noon a very appetizing weight control luncheon was served to thirteen members and three guests, the guests were Mrs. J. B. Maxwell. Mrs. L. R. Manning and daughter, Roberta. After lunch, Mrs. Gillen led in group singing which was much enjoyed. Mrs. B. V. Yadon presided at the business meeting, in the absence of Chairman Mrs. M. C. Thurman. Mrs. Charles Thurman will entertain the club at the next regular meeting, February the eight eenth. The subject will be "Care of the Hair," led by Mrs. L. C. Wishard, and Mrs. L. Thurman. FRIENDS HONOR MATRON ON ANNIVERSARY Mr. Jack D. Evans enter tained a few friends with a social evening on January the twenty-fifth, at his home, E40S Independence street, the occasion being Mrs. Evans' birthday. The group motored to Keno for dancing and re turned to the Evans' home later for refreshments when the honored guest was pre sented with a number of gifts. Those enjoying the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Liv ingston, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Poole, Helen Hanks, Wlllma Lee, Clifford Troid, Clifford Stone, Raymond and Frank Jump, Warren Ezell. The Compeers club of the First Christian church met Wednesday afternoon, Janu ary the twenty-second, at the home of Mrs. Mary Hayden on Division street The after noon was spent in an informal manner with needlework. Venturists Hear Interesting Talk Mrs. Odell Tells of Early Klamath Days, Shows Valuable Picture Collection , Highlighting the meeting of the Klamath Fall Venture club held In tho Willard hotel on the evening of January the twenty-first, was an informative and entertaining talk on "Per sons and Personalities of Early Klamath" by Mr. Ida M. Odell. Thi wa prepared from a valuable atore of Information gathered over a period of years, all of which ha vital civie interest for present day Klamath Falls residents. It had espe cial Interest for Venture club members, as it was the opening , program on a study project chosen by them for the coming year "Our Town." Mr. Odell had with her a scrapbook containing a not able collection of pictures of Klamath County' early days. Perhaps the most valuable of these pictures were three ta ken by Peter Brltt in 1874; one of Linkville, and two of Crater Lake. These were the first photographs ever taken of the subjects, and the orig inals were given to the late H. E. Momyer by Mr. Brltt'e son. Mr. Britt was an early day photographer of Jackson ville, Oregon. Among other Interesting pictures shown were ones of Klamath Falls taxen from the same viewpoint as the 1874 original, one in 1893, one in 1895, and one in 1910. Another photographer illustrates why Klamath Falls is so called, showing a cascade of falls above the present bridge. These falls have never been seen by people taking up their residence here in the past twenty years, Mrs. Odell said. Through the kindness of Mr. J. O. Hamaker there is contained in this collection a photograph of the engineer who made the first plat of Linkville with his surveying instruments and a New Year's greeting shown on the card. Other pictures show the arrival of the first train in Klamath Falls, the laying of the first pavement, the old est house now standing, and stage coaches. Following the dinner Miss Dora Cameron and Miss Mona Faus were initiated by the pre sident. Miss Margaret West, as new members of the Vent ure club, using a ceremony prepared by a member of the Soroptimist club, which in structed the new members in the ideals and aims of this service club. They were then presented with corsages tied with ribbons in the colors of the club. Miss Cameron is employed at the United States .m PERSON iBWiSiiM and. 1 TnUrnafioA Rubinoff Signed to Appear at Klamath Falls Announced today by the Lions club was the news that Rubinoff, famous conductor, composer and violinist, and his $100,000 Stradivarius violin, will offer a concert of popular classical music at the high school auditorium on February 9 at 3 p. m. Breaking a precedent of seven years, during which time he was featured on nationwide radio broadcasts as a conductor, Rubinoff is now touring the country offering a concert presentation of the modern classics. - In negotiating for the celebrated instrumentalist's local engagement! the Lions club believe they have booked one of the country's most popular musical attractions. Talented as an instrumentalist, composer and conduct or, Rubinoff leaped into national prominence as the result of the inspirational quality of his music. His programme will include music from his famed broadcasts, original com-, positions, tunes from his motion pictures and other familiar classics. Rubinoff is a name in every home that possesses a radio and there are more than 20 million radios in the na tion. This legion of listeners will almost certainly result in capacity audiences for his local appearance. The president announces that an invitation had been received from the Kiwani club to participate in their luncheon on the following Thursday and view the film presented by the Life Under writers. This Invitation waa cepted by the club. Topics for the next study meeting to be held on the fourth of February were dis tributed. Among these topics are such questions as: How large was Klamath Falls in 1907? What percentage of the population is foreign born? How many negroes are there? What brought the immigrants to your community? What na tionalities are represented and in what proportions? What proportion of the population does not speak English? Present at the meeting, in addition to the members of the club, the two new mem bers, and the guest speaker, were Mrs. Laura Bertram, Miss Pat Healey, Miss Flop.; ence Tetzloff, and Mrs. Ruth Ray, a member of the Ventura board.
