ADVANCES 3 REASONS FOR 1 DRV Three reasons why the AFL is seeking to organize lumber workers of the Klamath basin were advanced Thursday by Joe Boyd and Mike Pavolka, AFL organizers for this territory. Issuing a statement in the midst of widespread controversy over wages and hours in Pacific Northwest lumber operations, Boyd enumerated the following: "First," he said "wage differ entials have already been adjust ed in the north, but adjustments have yet to be made in the Klamath basin. "Second, too large a percen tage of workers In the basin get the minimum wage, whereas under union agreements not more than 20 per cent of any crew may receive the minimum in organized sections of the north. "Third, the minimum in the Klamath basin is slightly less than the minimum in the north prior to wage increases made there or now being sought by striking workers." Boyd said AFL organizational meetings are scheduled for vari ous local lumber concerns nearly every night. Thursday night Ewauna Box company employes were to meet at AFL headquarters, 702 Main street. Friday night, Big Lakes employes were scheduled to meet, and Monday night a meet ing has been called for Weyer haeuser. Other operations will meet next Tuesday and Wednes day. SOLDIERS REQUIRE 1500 FEET OF LUMBER EACH PORTLAND. Ore., Dec. 13 W) Each soldier in permanent bar racks requires 1900 feet of lum ber and each soldier in tent en campments requires 800, Col. W. B. Greeley, secretary-manager of the West Coast Lumber men's association, yesterday told the Western Forestry and Con servation association. He assured foresters and lum bermen that the industry was meeting all defense needs, in cluding technical engineering re quirements as well as housing. In tho month of January, 1911, 390 Inches of rain fell In Tamarack, Calif. Klamath Fathers Win Notice for Hadlator Stunt Tho Klamath city council's unpleasant experience of a hot evening last summer, when the steam radiators were run ning at full winter pressure, Is depleted in a cartoon in the magazine, Plumbing and Heat ing Business. In the picture, seven pant ing men are shown gathered around a table while a nearby radiator exhausts steam with a "fff-t." Heat waves rise from their sweltering shoulders while they wipe their brows. The council probably wouldn't mind a little more of that heat these winter Monday evenings. FIRE DESTROYS OLENE HOUSE OLENE Fire of undeter mined origin leveled the old Bal lentine place about 9 o'clock Thursday morning. The frame structure is located near Olcne and occupied by Harry Kinney who was said to have been home at the time of the blaze but un able to halt the fire. Insects average about eight generations annually. E A more strict observance of the Sabbath in Klamath Falls was advocated by Rev. Victor Newman, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, in a hard-hitting talk delivered at Thursday's meeting of the Klamath Kiwanls club. Rev. Newman said ho had never been in a community where there have been such "flagrant violations of the time- honored institution of Sunday ob servance," particularly with ref erence to business houses stay ing open. He paid glowing tribute to the hills and streams of the Klamath country and deplored the fact "too many of us let these things lead us away from God." The minister Spoke urgently in be half of church attendance. Rev. Newman's topic was "The Duties and Responsibilities of Free Men in a Free Country," Speaking about conscientious objection to bearing arms, the minister said "we honor the sin cerity of conscientious object ors," but he added that while the Bible says, "Blessed are the meek," and "Blessed are the peacemakers," It does not say that one should permit others to come in and trample over their rights without defending those rights. 1 Rev. L. K. Johnson Introduced Rev. Newman. TO FEDERAL POST ASHLAND. Ore., Deo. 13 K.H The Southern Oregon Federal Business association Thursday elected B. G.
