Ever since 1035, with the start of the Ethiopian campaign, fas cist Italy has boaated of her air force ai a factor offsetting Its lack of a big navy. Premier Mussolini's venture Into Greece promises to evoke the first severe test to which his air legions have been put But the Greek campaign, undertaken In part to make Great Britain's position in the Near East untenable, exposes Italy to two hazards. The British Mediterranean fleet continues to function and Is buttressed, now, by a refurbished royal air force. British air power numerically Is Inferior to Italy's, but day by day it is growing strong In the Near East. On the ebb and flow of the air war may well depend the ultimate outcome of the cam paign. First, let's look at the role air power has played up to date. It contributed mightily to the German conquests of Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The British admitted the striking power of the German air force was the decisive factor In the conquest of Norway. To succeed in it! conquest of the eastern Inland sea, Italy must establish and maintain definite air superiority In the ab sence of sea superiority; Greece must be subdued and Marshal Grazianl's armies must be sup plied In Africa during their at tempted march on Egypt. As long as the British Medi terranean fleet is operative, Italy's communication line to Africa Is In constant danger of being cut. Intensification of Italy's at tacks on that fleet naturally fol lows. Air attacks on warships have been no novelty In this war. British submarines and de stroyers have been sunk from the air, and German and Italian submarines have succumbed to British air attacks. Britain's ability to cope with tho Italian air force In support of the Greeks ond In defense of her own fleet will constitute a large measure of her ability to frustrate Premier Mussolini's de signs in the Near East. Britain as yet has Insufficient planes In tha Near East for a major blow. Against that fact can be weighed disadvantages besetting Italy a lack of con struction materials due to the blockade, the meager flying ex perience of her pilots and the questionable effectiveness of an air force pitted against a navy.
