Private WUllam F. Hamilton - , A Little Relaxation Battery Klamath Falls contact thus far with the upsurging national de fense program has come chiefly through the ;activities of the Oregon National Guardsmen of this community, called by President Roose velt to a year's training service., Officially mobilized on September 16, the guardsmen, composing Batteries A and C of the 249th coast artillery, have made the armory their headquarters until entraining for. Camp-Clatsop on the . Oregon coast. They have marched dailyrthrough the streets, giving a dis tinctly military touch to the downtown scene; The armory has been a veritable beehive, with training routine developed in its preliminary stages and strict military order observed.- : v When the guardsmen ' were' mobilized,'- Governor Charles A. Sprague asked Oregon communities to do "something special" for their national guardsmen on the occasion , of. their call to the army service. Nowhere was there quicker , or more-wholehearted response than, in Klamath Falls. Initiated by the American Legion and a group of service club leaders, a mens fund movement for the two batteries moved rapidly to its first goal and now a reserve fund for further use Is being built. On the occasion of the guardsmen's final weekend in their homo town, a colorful parade and a farewell party wore arranged in their honor. National guard activity was started in Klamath Falls in 1926, when Battery D of the 240th coast artillery was formed. About six months ago, Battery D's name was dropped and Batteries A,-and C! were organized. Commanding officer of Battery A is Captain J. F. Olin and that of Battery C is .Captain George D. Powell. Major Theodore D. Case, former commander of Battery A, was recently promoted and is now executive officer of the first battalion, of which the two local batteries are a part. i The Klamath guardsmen have an enviable record for excellence at camp and at home, and the community salutes them as it bids them a proud good-bye.
