The plane, a Curtlaa Wright Hawk, waa headed north aa part of a aquadron of like planea from Moffett field. Near Mott field the oil line developed trouble and the pilot, Lieutenant Wright, decided to land at the emergency field to repair the broken part. Due to the deceiving appear ance of the field from the air and It Inadequate length for thla type of hlgh-epeed plane, the pilot came into the field at too high a apeed. He gunned the motor and pulled up, pre paratory to circling the field and making another attempt; but aa he roae about 80 feet Into the air and a quarter mile paat the field, hla motor cut out en tirely, cauaing him to loa alti tude. A craah being inevitable, the pilot thought faat and apun hla plan tideway Into the bruah alnce a head-on craah Into the ground would cauae the plane to turn over, potalbly Injuring him aerloualy. Having negotiated th landing without injury to htmaelf, the lieutenant reported the craah to hla auperlora through the camp telephone and a detail of men were diapatched to guard the plane day and night agalnat aouvenlr huntera and alto the taking of photograph which 1 prohibited by the war depart ment regulation!.
