He ia Franx Josel II ol Liech tenstein, handsome ruler ot a happy little principality sand wiched between Switzerland and what was once Austria, Most ot 10,213 subjects think he's won derful and so do most of Eur ope's unmarried young princesses. Franz Josel, now thirty three and a bachelor, is decidedly a po tential princely catch for most any girl and here's what makes him so. He is no fly-by-nlght monarch seated on a shaky throne. His family originated in the 12th century and were free barons long before they began a long uninterrupted rule as Princes of Liechtenstein ln 1608. Despite lis magnificent scen ery, its handsome prince and its most tax-Iree peasantry there's little ln Liechtenstein to make it worth while lor a big power to grab it. Furthermore Germany and Switzerland, Its only neigh bors, have recognized Prince Franz Joset's little realm. Nor 1b the prince one ot Eur ope's penniless titles armed only with charm, a family tree, and an eye for wealthy mates. He's the bead ot one ol Europe's wealth iest families. The great Liechtenstein palace in Vienna with one ot the world's finest art collections la his. He still owns twenty-odd castles and great estates ln old Austria, Bo hemia and Germany proper. He isn't a land-poor prince either, for most ot his estates make money.' He loses on -Liechtenstein which pays him nothing. In Liechtenstein he owns a castle that looks like it came right out of an artist's concep tion ot what a medieval castle should look like outside. Inside It has an elevator and modern plumbing. There's little chance of Liech tenstein's prince being killed in battle either, for boa a peace able prince and his little prin cipality has no army. Forestry Is his hobby." ' Nor 1b the prince likely to ac quire any gray hairs governing his subjects (or, like England's king, ho rules but he does not govern. Liechtenstein's elected parliament and premier doea that. Furthermore, it any girl gets Franz Josel and marries him in Liechtenstein the marriage is permanent, lor there's no divorce in the little principality. Divorce la banned by constitution. There have been many rumors of the prince's Impending engage ment or marriage, tor the young ruler geta around. His name has frequently been linked with var ious unattached females ot the Hapsburg clan, but so far noth ing haa happened. Since the war began ln western Europo Franz Josez, who apeaks five languages including English, haa settled down ' ln his little principality Instead ot living ln 34 Automotive more cosmopolitan cities like Vienna, Paris and London. Still more recently he baa moved from bia modern hunting lodge on Liechtenstein's mountain top to the renovated castle on the moun tain side. The monarchy of Liechtenstein ia hereditary through the male line. Liechtenstein's subjects, very proud ot their handsome prince who gave each school child ln the realm a Christmas gift ot more than one dollar last year, hope he'll marry and start raising a family soon.
