Mary reached eagerly for the let ter, aware anew of a feeling she could not nam. "Now let's have a look. Take a deep breath," she could hear the nurse saying aa the ether cone waa clamped down on her nose and mouth. "Steady there. Steady. Steady." A hand gripped her wrist as her puis was being counted. She choked and tried to fight oft th ether. Down a well she tumbled. Th well was deep and gray. There were faces on all sides. There was Vincent Gregg. There was th blue black face of Carla Mar chetta, magnificent in plumes, rich furs and Jewels. Lady Ponce Townsend seemed to com into th seen. On on arm she had a pile of bedraggled garments. But she also held a stack of pencil sketches. Then there was th blond boy who had frightened her from th shadows of th Moravia's deck. And Gilbert Lenox. It must hav been Gilbert Lenox who kept say ing "Steady. Steady."
