In on of the fastest fames played an Modoc field this season, the Klamath lied Box defeated the Klamath Pelicans, Southern Ore gon league foes, by a score of 4-3. Al Hogan, recant recruit from Washington State college, out pitched the Pelican hurler, Orlo Oakas, by allowing only six hits and whiffing eight men. This was Hogan'i first game tor the . Sox. Wheeler Leads Hitters -: Koy Wheeler, heavy hitting Sox shortstop, lead his team in blows for the day, slamming out three safe hits In tour, times at bat. two at his hits being doubles. Floyd Shipman, Sox captain and outfielder, collected two safe blows off Oakes. The game started out as a pitcher's duel, no scores being made until the third inning. In I the third frame for the Pelicans, Oakes singled and was sacrificed around the bags by Venlnger ana Donaldson, scoring on an error by the Sox outfield. The Sox came back the same inning with nam' merlcksen safe on a fielder's choice, stealing second, and scor ing on Wheeler's hot single. In the fifth Inning the Sox got to Oakes for three more hits ana two tree passes to first, scoring two runs. The final tally for the Box came in the seventh when Hammericksen singled and scored on Wheeler's double. Pelicans Stage Rally - The first of the eighth frame found the Pelicans trailing by a score of four to one. In a final rally the Pelicans touched Hogan for two hits and one run In the eighth. Venlnger and Donaldson both singled, Venlnger scoring on a long fly to right field by Welch. During the ninth frame. Brow, pinch-hitting tor Gala, doubled. Fryer. Pelican catcher, singled, ' Brow acored on Brown's fly to center field. , Both teams played beads-up baseball throughout the game, Wheeler and Hammericksen mak ing sparkling plays for the Sox, nd Donaldson, pelican second' sacker. thrilling the fans with sensational catch In short right field. Last Tuesday's wild match saw Belcastro lose his second battle of the year when he was disqualified for fouling. Rapid Transit Chess Tourney Set Wednesday The Klamath Chess club will hold a rapid transit tournament on Wednesdsy at the Baldwin hotel. The time limit will be 20 seconds per move. All chess players are Invited to bring their chessmen and boards and sit in. A good time Is promised to all with no disgrace to the losers. Play will start promptly at 8:00 o'clock. Members ot the Klamath club point out that nearly all games are conducted on a time basis. Three minutes to s move is the usual basis. The National and International Tournaments are usually based on two and pne half hours for the first 60 moves and two hours for each addi tional 40 moves. ' Each player has a time clock at his elbow and going over the time forfeits the game. Very few go over the first 60 moves. A player may take a couple of hours for one move if he wish, but he would have to move pretty fast on his remaining moves to make up for lost time. Whenever a player Is sitting as It In a trance, one may figure that bis mind Is working at top speed. The Los Angeles ath lete Is a strong, aggressive and rough , battler who has upset some of the best heavyweights In his own division. Britt's last meeting with Christy was in the finals of the Los Angeles heavyweight tourna ment for the gold-plated, dia, mond-studded Junior heavy weight belt put up by the Na tional Wrestling association and presented by George Raft, the picture star. . Britt won the match and the belt after losing one fall and taking two from Christy. The champion's plan of bat tie will be to crowd Christy as much as possible. A .fighting Medford tennis tesm, playing under a blistering sun, gained a nine to seven vlC' tory over the visiting Klamath Falls toam. Eddie Boyd, playing number one for Klamath, got off to a flying atart, easily winning the first set with hard, well placed drives. However, Carter Boggs, his opponent, displayed an un canny steadiness, winning the next two sets. The scores were 6-2, 2-6. 2-6. Cone Beats Crawford Jack Crawford, who has been unable to practice recently, lost to the rising young Medford star. Melvln Cope, 6-8. 4-6.
