The employers previously had voted a wage Increase asked by the unions. . The lockout began after 600 men walked out in five camps. Employers began shutting down logging operations. Sawmill employers here said for the most part that their sup ply of logs would be exhausted by the end of this week or the first of next week, necessitating a ces sation of their operations. The shutdown has been accom panied by a ahow of violence In the Portland district. Two men were beaten up within the past few days and the beadrig of one sawmill waa destroyed. Detec tives were investigating in an ef fort to learn whether the headrlg had been tampered with. OKLAHOMA CiVy. May 21 (UP) The sultry Oklahoma air grew blisteringly hot Wednesday aa Gomer Smith, vice president of the Towasend organisation, gave answer to charges that he bought firewater for Indians with or ganisation funds. Smith enlarged upon his opin ion of the congressional commit tee which is investigating old age pension schemes by flatly defying the committee to subpoe na, him. , Inquisition ' "Those scandal mongers can go to hell," he ahouted as a be ginning. Hla further denuncia tions of the committee probably were noted by the weather bu reau as nnprintable causes of high temperatures. "The tyranny of King George, which brought on the revolution waa gentleman's condnct com pared to that of this committee,' he said after cooling a degree or two. "Tola inquisition is being conducted overbearingly. The one idea is to bnst the Townsend movement' Political Machine Blamed Smith asserted that the demo cratic machine of Boss Tom Pen- dergaat In Missouri waa respon sible for the present investiga tion. Pendergaat fears that only the Townsend movement can Im pair his strength In Missouri and has determined to wreck the movement, 8mlth said. Representative Jasper Bell, democrat, Missouri, chairman of the committee and James R. Sullivan, its counsel, are mem bers of the Missouri democratic machine. Banning for Senator "If Bell's committee wants to start a fight with me. they're welcome," Smith roared. "It I have to go to Jail to preserve the constitutional rights of my self a'ad other citizens, my ad vice to the committee is to get the cell ready now!" As for the firewater for the Indians, Smith exploded with "That's a lie, every word of It Neither state or national Townsend organizations have contributed or spent a damned dime in my behalf." Smith . Is campaigning for United States senatorshlp on a Townsend platform. The tendency to overbid hearts or diamonds is exaggerated by the fact that red requires great er eye exertion to be seen clear ly. The revision in Benton coun ty, where Burt lives, cut 17 votes from the figure previously given Allen and added six to Burt's, while the Josephine re- check sliced tour votes from Burt's figure and left that for Allen unchanged. . Before the revision, Allen had led by 50 votea. , Inter-city Meeting Scheduled Friday About 175 guests are expect ed at an inter-city meeting spon sored by the Klamath Falls Ro tary club for Friday evening at the Willard hotel. This will be a dinner with dancing follow ing the program which will feature Paul McKee, president of the Portland Gaa and Coke company and other utilities, and president-elect of the Portland Rotary club.
