The advance guard of mora than 200 young athletes began arriving In Klamath Falls Fri day in preparation for the fifth annual Southern Oregon-Northern California track meet on Mo doc field Saturday afternoon. Twelve achoola have entered the running for the A and B division championships. ' Oood -weather warm and clear held out the promise of record times, distances and heights In .many events. Modoc field has been placed In fast condition, thus assuring the com peting youths, the best, possible circumstances for a crack at the records. . The Klamath Pelicans still stood forth as the favorites in the A division. Any one of sev eral teams was regarded as hav ing an equal chance tor the B championship. Aa the entry list now stands the competing schools will in clude: A division Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, Lakeview, Bend and Corvallis. ' B division Keno, Merrill, Dor ris, Henley. Malin, Chtloquin.- Of special interest la the en trance of the Corvallis team, one of the strongest in the Willam ette valley. Not since the 1932 meet when Eugene entered has a team come from so far north. Corvallis is sending five men. While the squad is not expected to lift the title, it should be in the lead for Individual honors. A special luncheon will be held by the 20-30 club Saturday noon Following this event there will be a parade down Main street to Modoc field. With one of the closest pennant races in history expected, the Southern Oregon league will open Its regular 1986 12-game sche dule next Sunday, May 10, with Klamath Falls and Grants Pass drawing the Inaugural encounters. At Klamath Falls, the 1935 champion Red Sox will tnngle with the Klamath Falls Pelicans at Modoc field, while at Grants Pass, the Glendale Loggers open hostilities against tha Grants Pass Merchants, last year's runners up. Pelicans Start Southpaw Both games will start at 2:30 p. m. sharp. At both Initial bat tle scenes, the largest crowds In years are expected to be In the stands. Opening day ceremonies have been arranged at Grant Pass and Klamath Falls, with league and city officials taking part. Vera Francis, manager of the Red Sox, will throw a southpaw against the Pelicans In an attempt to start bis champs off to another pennant. Lowell Brown, former ly of Jefferson high of Portland, will do the hurling for the Red Sox with Lawrance Granger back of the plate. Last year's ace Red Sox-chucker, Clyde Carlstrom, will hold down first base. At Grants Pass, former major leaguer Ken Williams will also rely on a lefthander to subdue the "dark horse" Glendale club. Nineteen year old Bob Hardy will do the pitching for the Merchants with Al Drolette back of the bat.
