Lewis' resolution was a revised draft of a similar measure In troduced by Senator James Davis, republican, Pennsylvania, which was reported favorably by the expenditures committee but scut tled at the last moment by Sen ate Majority Leader Joe T, Rob inson. The modified proposal doea not contain charges that WPA records have been suppressed and salary figures have been un available to congress which were embodied In the Davis resolu tion. Simultaneously, It be cam known that as democratic lead ers agreed to support tha forth coming Inquiry they hastily filled two i vacancies on Lewis' com mittee with ardent new dealers Key Plttman, democrat, Ne vada, and Alben Berkley, demo crat, Kentucky. This assures that the Inquiry will be eon trolled by democrats. The battle about the relief Inquiry began when Lewis blithely offered the favorable re port of tbe expenditures com mittee on the Davis resolution. In addition to Lewis' endorse ment. It had the support of two other democrats, Robert F. Wag ner, New York, and Frederick Van Nuys, Indiana. Robinson, stunned for a mo ment, arose and rushed to Lewis' seat. His eyes blazing, his face flushed, he argued heatedly. He apparently was firm because Robinson stomped to his seat Republicans tittered. In a few moments, tbe Illinois sena tor walked slowly to Robinson's desk and sat down. The argu ment began anew. Finally, Lewis withdrew the report, later intro ducing his substitute. MOTORS VALVIg Editorials on News ' (Continued from Page One) lng a loan beforehand and signing a note. They just wrote checks and later settled for the over drafts. It was only with the ad vent of tighter banking laws and less permanent population that the custom died out.) e TN THI8 connection, W. A. (Bill) Delzell some years ago told this writer an amusing story. Shortly after the adoption of Oregon's first state banking law, a spruce young examiner appeared at the Brick Store to go over Its banking business, : After a half day spent on the books, he showed up before the owners practically foaming at the mouth. "Do yon know the fix you're In?" he demanded. ! "You've got a long line of loans out, and the only assets I can find are a big list of overdrafts! If yon don't get ont and get these overdrafts converted Into bankable notes, you're aa good as looking Into the penitentiary doors right now!" "Tho funny part of it," BUI added with a chuckle, "was that every one of those overdrafts was as good as gold." Again, you see, the Brick Store knew its customers. ' "NE more tale, related the other day by Bert Hall: "One of the Brick Store's big accounts (a man well known over $ additional. 'Krue additional. Prices ' 1 .- ...... ' this whole country) ran on tor several years, and finally wm fig ured np for settlement. Tha own era looked over tho figures and one of them shook hla head. , '1 don't think that's corroct,' he said. 'We owe him money, Inwtead of him owing us.' "So they figured it again, over and over, end It finally turned out they DID owe him money 1 10, 000, which was promptly paid, to the great surprise of the customer, who hadn't kept track of It him self, and was autonlshed to learn that he had so much coming." ."'''''"'''' pHEY : wore shrewd, capable -- business men, those proprie tor of the old Brick Store, and they were out to make money for themselves, But they wore HONEST. Tho crescent of tha new moon Is only that part of the moon on which the sun Is shining. Tha unllghted side tends to giva Ilia Impression of empty space be tween the two horns of the cres cent. ...
