At any rate Such Is the feeling among oiiUof-state buyers In the middle west and northwest. . Recently Safeway stores In Portland made a sale of nine 1.000 bushel cars of onion sets to their buyers In Kannaa city, Topeka, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This sale was made from sam ples of Oregon Brown Onion sets previously submitted to these markets. So excellent was the quality of Oregon onion sets BJld so attractive the prices that these markets preferred them to Chicago sets In spite of the higher freight differential. More recently Snfcway's Ore gon Stores have snipped two car loads to Seattle, Spokane, and Tucoma brunches and at the present time Is shipping au aver ago of five cars of Oregon onions a week out of the state. Prior to these shipments, mar ket prices on onion seta were considered to be at the lowest level In history. Since then, re action from these sales has made Itself felt In a strengthening or the market, and Safeway is very nleasod to have contributed In some maasure toward Improving this situation. DEMAND FOR WOOL nnsTOM. Fob. St. IJP The Commercial Bulletin will say to morrow; . "rtumnnit for wool has fallen off still further this week. Stocks of old domestic wool have be como almost negligible and snles are being supplemented by for eign wools to the extent of about a million pounds a weeK. Auuea to this, there has been some re sale for contract wools but this has not been of great moment. "Responsive to tne Slower tem po In the eastern markets, buy ing of new contracts In the west have beetl much slower. Prices paid havo shown little change. Tho big movement was in Ne vada, where 26 cents was paiu rn, i u million Dound8 of fair length flno wools early In the week. "Forolgn markets are very firm. "Tho manufacturing position Is without material change but rather slower, on the whole. "Mohair 18 in very moaerau demand at firm prices." (P) Severn weather conditions con tinued to have an adverse effect on the flow of business and trade last week. Dun & Brad street reported today In their weekly summary. Retail operations were slowed down by snows and sub-sero temperatures In many sections. Gains were confined to urban centers and tor all areas the average Increase In retail vol ume over the comparable period last year was held down to 1 to 6 per cent. "As undelivered orders ac cumulated at shipping terminals, new commitments to wholesalers were reduced In sp'te of urgent consumers needs, the summary said. "Lack of inland waterway fa cilities and further congestion at warehouses hampered some In dustrial divisions, but operations generally were unchanged for the week. "In spite of the moderate In creases In retail sales In some districts, the strength of the de mand that developed for fuel oils, coal, heavy clothing, hard ware and other urgent- winter necessities was not sufficient to offset the Interest postponed in most Items until more comfort able shopping weather will have arrived. . "With the downtrend of re tall distribution continued for the second week, orders to whole salers in nearly " all branches were curtailed. While there,.wa sllght lessening of merchandise needs, due to lack of stocks re quired for current promotions, commitments were postponed un til the arrival of goods already specified. "Little concern has been at tached to this temporary slack ening of orders, as spring buy ing has been completed only par tially in the majority of lines. As a result, an enormous vol ume of business' will be thrown on wholesalers in March, due to the early Easter which fall on April 12 in contrast to April 21 a year ago."
