It sounds disappointing, but the reasons for the high school board's decision are Justifiable unit sound. The delay In grassing the nlnvlng field centers around tho move to make Modoc field something of a community rec ".' reatlonal center. To turf It now, the field would be useless -for all other activities until football rolled around again next fall. No especial benefit has yet been gained from the lighting system installed early last au tumn. It the field is torn up and seeded, the lights will stand idle, except for football, until the soring and summer of 1937, It would mean no more night Softball games, no more Sunday ba;eball, no more drilling for the American Legion drum corps, no more track meets, and no more public events of . any kind. Tie lights, too, must be paid for, and the only way to meet ' the expense Is to use the Held. With all the public recrea- ' Uonal benefits the lighting sys tem can bring next spring and summer, it undoubtedly would ' be unwise to eliminate the use- . fulness of the field this year by : putting in grass. In the state penitentiary. Ambrose Donovan, attorney for Mrs. Hasty, Immediately indicat ed he would appeal to the state supreme court. Mrs. Hasty's only comment was, "It is a mistake. I am In nocent." 13 u r n e y Zlmmer, convicted with Mrs. Hasty, filed a motion tor a new trial. A decision will not be made for two weeks. The court refused the woman's re quest for another trial. Cascys 6 Camp Bonanza 6 Lost River 5 Old Fort 4 Sons S Maccabees ....2 Balsiger ....l Malin -.0 The heretofore steady stride of the Knights of Columbus toward a City league basketball cham pionship was halted at the ar mory Wednesday night by an Inspired combination from Lost River Dairy. The Dairymen, playing their best ball of the season, knocked the Caseys out of the undisputed leadership by a 36 to 23 score. The losers were heavy favorites when the teams took the floor for the second halt of the double header. Old Fort Wins Old Fort trimmed Balsiger, 43 to 26, in the opening game. With the exception of the 4 to 3 lead at the end of the first quarter the Caseys never saw the lead, while the Dairymen. sparked by three soaring bas kets in quick succession by dimin utive Earl Brooks, piled up a five point lead at the half. The Dairymen, continuing their scoring spree in the third quar ter were registering 11 more tal lies while the Caseys were being held to one field goal and a foul conversion making the count 26- 13. before "Chuck" Hess, high scoring Casey forward, started a rally which saw the Green and Wbite come within five- points of tying up the score. Not to be outdone. It (ff) Coach Slats Gill, building a de fense to be used against the Uni versity of Oregon basketball team at Eugene Friday night, sent his Oregon State Beavers against a bruising team of giants more noted for their football than for their basketball exploits. It is doubly hard to devise a defense against Oregon for all five of the regulars and the many reserves are strong scoring threats and every player must be closely checked. Gill pointed out.
