Wednesday, January 7, 1931 We Are Going Forward THHE increase in the number of new telephone connec tions made in Klamath Falls during the year 1930 adds more irrefutable proof to the claim that this is the fastest growing city in Oregon. While more new tele phones were added in Portland during the year than in this city, the percentage of gain is highly in favor of Klamath Falls. Klamath Falls also showed a substantial gain hi postal receipts during 1930, which together with the aplendid increase in the number of new telephones Added affords two excellent barometers of the direction an which this city is going. And there is no doubt but that the present year Is fcoing to witness further growth and development in this pity. Already a number of improvements have been an nounced for the year, chief of which is that of the Southern Pacific in a decision to expend $200,000 in the development of industrial sites along Ewauna Lake. There is strong probability of the Great Northern build ing an independent road directly south to complete the Bnk to a junction with the Western Pacific at Beiber. plif. There is also evidence that there will be a good Irolume of new construction in the city during the year. Back in the industrial centers of the middlewest and east thousands of men are being called back to the fac tories of automobile and tire firms, affording splendid indication that the depression which we have with us for over a year has reached the bottom and that we are on the upward turn. All in all, there ia much to instill ns with confidence that the year upon which we are just entering will hold much for Klamath Falls and the great Klamath Basin in the way of growth and progress. Mussolini Talks Peace XffUSSOLINI dictator of Italy, talked to America New Year's day and, knowing his audience, talked peace instead of war. Nor is there any good reason for doubting his good faith when he says that Italy will never start a war and that neither he nor his people wish to see one. ' Mussolini has done a good deal of strutting, and has disturbed his neighbors not a little by it. But probably he has done this for its effect at home, and with no special thought of alarming Italy's neighbors. He is a theatrical chap, and his people are impressed by dra matic talk and acts. He wants to stiffen their national spirit so that they will go along with him in his plans to build a greater Italy, and he has chosen this way of doing it Probably he means no harm, but still It is a danger ous business. When the Italian postoffice service, mis quoting Virgil, puts on its stamps valorous boasts about Italy's strength and subtle suggestions of Italy conquer ing the world it is not to be taken too literally. But Mussolini's methods have certainly alarmed some of Italy's neighbors, and they may have set up a state of mind in Italy that could be dangerous if one of these neighbors, reacting to this alarm, did something that Italians construed as menacing. Barking dogs never bite, it is said, but a timid some body answered that the barking dog might stop barking. The situation will be easier when Mussolini gets far enough along with his plans so he feels that he can stop strutting and waving a sword. ; You Make The Ticket QTRANGE how perplexed we are because we don't go further and amount to more. It was th most conven ient theory and It seemed prob able. But research reveals that thia principle ia not polaonooa to waterfowl, and names tha culprit agent, which apparently thrive only under identical conditions. It would appear. Indeed, to be carrying coals to Newcastle to observe that wild duck must have water, and that the water must be reasonably abundant. The Automobile Toll Syracuse Post Standard: Ac cording to the definite figures for the three years Just past and the best of estimates and indica tions for that part of the pres ent year which has now elapsed, we have, since the beginning of 1937. made an automobile rec ord of 100,000 fatalities In this country. And It is In this coun try where most of th killing to done. American deatba In automobile accidents reached the total of 26,000 in 1927. the figures being those of the national aafety couir cil. In 1928 there was an addi tion of 27.000 killings. And last year's figures went up to 11,000. That made 83,000 In three years, only 17,000 short of a six-figure total. And there Is every evidence that the 100,000 mark now has been reached, and, In all prob ability, passed.
