Mr. Steffins, owner of amuse

no ordinance against the operation
of such a business here, but stat
ed similar applications had been
refused in the past. Councilman
Oldi, chairman of the police com
mittee, said that refusals bad been
necessary in the past because of
the type of persons wishing to en
gage In the business. The matter
wn referred to the police commit
tee. .

ed to the position of city patrol
man upon the recommendation of
Keith Ambrose, chief ot police.

An Interesting Item in connec
tion with tho hotel location l
the report that it took three days
to film a sequence laid in one of
the large freight elevators. Ac
cording to the script. Miss Dress
ier and Miss Moran have just re
ceived the news ot the stack mar
ket crash and the total loss of
their investments. Seeking u
place of privacy In which they
may console each other, they en'
trr the freight elevator. As ho
tel atmosphere waa e.-sential. the
setting could not be built at the
studio and sound cameras, truck,
lights, etc., were shipped to one
of the largest California resort
hotels. Here the work ot film
ing the scene was held up inas
much as the hotel was unable to
grant Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer a
monopoly ot the elevtor which
waa needed for the transporta
tion ot foods and other articles
to upper floors. Consequently
Just about the time when mea
ner was ready to shoot the ele
vator scene it would be required
by the hotel and Miss Dressier
and Miss Moran would have to
move out. All told. It took ex
actly three davs to complete the
sequence.

yesterday an Item that Edward
Paulson died ot burns Inflicted
hy a hot Iron applied by his wife
to relieve a stomach pain. Dr.
Luther M. Lorauco reported to
day, however, that Paulson him
self applied the Iron, and died
from a blood dot on hla brain, and
not from burns from the iron. The
