for Corvallla where they will at
tend the seventh annnal educa
tional exposition which the Ore
gon mute college la sponsoring
for Friday and Saturday tor over
700 high school dolegates. repres
enting 141 schools. The two
days will be dovoted to vocational
guidance and counseling.

the mining engineering depart

An unidentified woman, about
24 years old, and her escort.
Carmine Barelll, 30, were ahot
and killed In the Bronx early
today by four men who alighted
from an automobile, fired two
bnlleta Into each and reentering
the car drove away.
The woman was fashionably
gowned and wore two diamond
rings. There were no marks of
Identification on her person.
Barelll died a few mlnntes af
ter the shooting and the woman
while being taken to Morrlsanla
hospital.
Pair Waa Walking
The two were walking In In
wood Avenue, the Bronx, when
the tour men alighted from their
machine, They attempted to flee
In opposite directions but the
gunmen chased them and shot
them down.
F.mployes of a nearby garage
told the police the man and wo
man had proceeded about 60 feot
from a garage where he hsd
stored his csr wneu the automo
bile with the four man drew up
to the rnrb beside them.
Both Tried To Ilea
Aa Hi men stepped from the
machine, tha woman screamed
and ataried to run north, whlla
Barelll fled In the opposite di
rection. Two ot the men chas
ed the woman, who after running
a few yard tripped and fell.
They then fired four shots at
her, one of which entered the
bock of her neck and the other
between the shoulder blade.
. Her screams attracted a negro
washer who had admitted the
couple to the Sherman garage a
few minutes earlier. He ran to
the street, pjeked ber np and
placed her In a tuilrab. She
waa dead when examined by a
hospital surgeon.
Meanwhile, the other two gun
men chased Barelll to the en
trance of another garage where
they tired five shots at him.
One pierced bis chin snd the
other his chest. A garage em
ploye called an ambulance, but
Barelll died before Its arrival.
At the Sherman garage It waa
said Barelll bad been atorlng bU
car there for the last two weeks
under the name of "C. Barell."
The first oil well was drilled In
Pensylvanla 70 years ago. It wss
9 1-2 feet deep. Today wells are
drilled 10,000 teet deep.
