The freakiest pitched ball
game I can recall among more
than 3000 games In which I of
ficiated as an American League
umpire goes back to the world
series ot 1920 between Cleveland
and Brooklyn. Jim Bagby was
th pitcher In that game and 1
never could quite make np my
mind as to whether Jim should
have felt proud or ashamed ot
that performance.
It was In 1920, you will re
member, that Bagby won 31
games for Cleveland. This Is a
lot ot games on the winning side
of the ledger and any pitcher
who accomplishes the feat must
be blessed with more then aver
age luck. Bagby surely hsd It
that year. It he blanked the op
position, the Indisns would some
how manage to get one or more
runs. It the opposition found
Jim for eight runs, the Indians
would find ways and means to
get him nine or more.
Bagby's good luck continued
with him In the 1920 world ser
ies, though for a time it seemed
as it Dam Fortune intended to
slip him nothing but frowns. Se
lected to pitch the second game
of the series. Bagby was pitted
against Burleigh Grimes. He held

the mastery ot Grimes' deceptive
spitball. Bagby waa beaten, 3-0.
It was Bsgby'g turn to start
the fifth game. Th series at
that time waa all even. Probably
never In the history ot a world
series gam was a winning pitch
er batted as savagely as was
Bagby that afternoon. It seemed
as If every Brooklyn hatter to
tac him hit' th ball on the
nose. Th Dodgers mad II hits,
yet could score only on run.
Cleveland won th ball gam. 3-1.
even though It made one hit
less than Brooklyn.
As a matter ot fact, Bagby
should hare been credited with
a shutout. Brooklyn scored a
run In the ninth when a ground
ball that "Doc" Johnston should
hsve handled, retiring the side,
was credited as a hit and re
sulted In a run. I am told Jim
took "Doc" to task in the club
house after the game, while the
rest ot the club roared with
Ianghter.
It seemed as it the bases were
loaded with Brooklyn players all
afternoon, but something would

an unfortunate ending last night
when Dr. Karl Sarpolls, wrestling
physician ot Cleveland, suc
cumbed to an endless number of
Ed (Strangler) Lewis' vicious
headlocks and rabbit punches
after suffering Injuries when hs
went through tht ropes while
trying for his flying body scis
sors specialty. Sarpolls finally
succumbed, .lying prone on the
mat and had to be carried from
the ring. After an examination,
an ambulance was summoned and
he was taken to a hospital for an
X-ray examination.

to the showers In almost (vary
Inning, Bagby really should have
scored a shutout. This game waa
the turning point, aa It removed
Grimes, Brooklyn ace, 'from the
picture and Cleveland won the
sixth game and the aerie the
following day, 1-0. Turn back
baseball's pages and try to find
another gam like It from a
"freak" standpoint.

Jack Mitchell and Ray Lyness
went 16 minutes to a draw In a
special event.
