PACE TEN . I'HAPTKH JU.VIII Rod Happed Into the t,Dr eM and thn balled abruptly. For few second! he fancied be bed entered the wrong house. That wu eusurd. Tbls was Baker'l plaoe, all right. But what wai going on? Who could be beret "Whr, Baker, of couree," be told blmaelf, though itlll pussled. He'd never thought about the possibility of the man having a wife. Thli looked like a woman's work. But It wae tunny they hadn't waited until be wai out of the house. Perhaps they want ad blm to leave at once. He was still in the ball wben suddenly be was rooted to the spot by a greeting called out to blm from the kitchen. Was tbls an hallucination! "Rod, Is that yout" the voice sounded, a bit shaky. "Com out and help me with the steak, will you?" Rod moved on Into the living room, feeling just as he should have felt -completely bewildered. This couldn't be I Now lie knew be was the victim ot . his own mind. His brooding, ever the paat bad brought blm t to the verge of Insanity. That table. He stood staring at it, without answering the voice from the kitchen. Oh, be was still too sane for that! Of course there were no places laid tor two, no gorgeous red roses, and a lace doth. Then be sniffed. 'Oh, Lord," be groaned, "do I only Imagine that heavenly smell?" "Well, arent yon coming?" The voice from the kitchen was growing Impatient Just like a wife's. For answer be moved over and toucbed the rosea. Their feel waa unmistakable. Did people Imagine they felt things, too things that weren't there? Rod had a touch ot panic He drove out to the tkitchen like a veritable madman. He would find out It he could see the owner of that voice! It he could . . . then there 'was no doubt about It ... he was ready for the stralghtjacket. He saw her, standing before the kitohea table, fussing with a thick steak,' and not trusting herself to look up at him. He lifted his arm and drew his coat aleeva across his eyes. Bertie Lou waited for him to say some thing. She beard only a halt suppressed sound ot helpfess mis ery that brought her head up with a Jerk. "Why, what's the matter with you?" she cried and rushed over as though she feared he was go ing to fall and she could save him. Her touch on his arm had a strange effect. What happen en then was far from Bertie Lou's plans. Rod simply took her and held her. Held ber as a drowning man would hold to life. Bertie Lou could scarcely breathe. And she couldn't think at all. A humorous phrase came to her mind "this Is so sudden." It made her laugh. And the laugh, though It waa barely audible for lack of strength behind It, was a sound ot pure happiness. No, she was not thinking. But she had to breathe, and when she finally struggled out of Rod's embrace she remembered in a rush all that she had for gotten In this last moment. And Rod remembered too. Ber tie Lou belonged to Marco Pal mer. Rod's eyes Instantly became points of anguish of the soul so intense that Bertie Loo was com pelled to look away from him. "Why did yoa do that?" she aid brokenly. "Becsuse I love yon, Bertie Lou," Rod answered, his voice vibrant with emotion. "Oh, but yon don't!" she cried. Bertie Lou faced him with her head high and ber cheeks aflame. "Llla told me what yon saw at Marco Palmer's house. I went to ber when I learned that she bad been out here. Oh, Rod," she hurried on In a rush, "how could you be lieve such a thing?" Rod stared at her a moment In dumb questioning. Then: "My Qod, what a blind fool I've been," he exclaimed bitterly. "Bertie Lou, you will never forgive me, will you?" Bertie Lou sank into a chair and burled her face on ber arms. Rod came over and knelt beside her. "Listen to me, please," he begged. Bertie Lou did not raise ber head. Neither did aha draw away from the hand ha put ten tatively on her arm. ' "I must have been mad," he went on, "but I have soma ex cuse, Bertie Lou. I had been dis illusioned, and I was sure yon didn't love me. Ton went away la such an unaccountable fash ion; yon hardly wrote just short, cool notes. . . "I knew about you and Llla," Bertie Lou Interrupted In muffled tones. "I found out before I went away." "There wasn't anything to find out then," Rod said with painful honesty. Now Bertie Lou raised ber head. "You told me a He," she charged him reproachfully. "I you said you had worked at the asked you why yon were late and office, or something. And you bad been to Llla's apartment!" "Tes." Rod admitted. "I had, but I couldn't tell yon why, Ber tie Lou. I didn't want to worry you." - "And you were there when I called your office just after I got that telegram from home," Ber tie Lou added. "I knew then that yon were In love with Llla." "No, don't say that!" Rod pleaded. "I won't lie to yon again, ever, even for your own sake. Please believe me. I didn't care much for Llla then except that I believed her a won derful friend. Later I thought I did. But It has been yon, Ber tie Lou, first, last and always since I first loved you. And there was nothing with Llla that I can't tell you about." Bertie Lou allowed him to take ber hands. "Will yon let me tell yon why I lied to you?" be which she struggled for faith in asked to break the silence In him. She nodded. Then Rod told her about tCi necklace and the bracelets. "She did that to cause trouble between us!" Bertie Lou cried at one point In the story. "Oh, Rod, if only yon bad told me why you had to save your money!" "I couldn't when yon came back from Wayville," ha answer ed. "Ton had changed so. I mean I thought you had. I'm ashamed of It, Bertie Lou, but I didn't believe yon would want to pay Llla the Insurance money." "I know. She bad made yon think I was a selfish little beast," Bertie Lou said. KLAMATH FALLS. And so tbey went on, bringing up their grievances, laying them, clearing away their misunder standings and coming nearer to each other than they ever had been before. Suddenly Rod remembered that Bertie Lou's presence in the Baker cottage was unexplained. "Tell ma how you happen to be here," be urged her. "It's where I ahould be." she boasted proudly. "Right la our own home I" She enjoyed Rod's evident per plexity, but she did not keep blm long in suspense. "I bad this house built with tha money yon sent me," she told him. "Llla did us on good turn, even If she didn't meaa to. She forced us to sava some money." But $1,000 wouldn't build this house," Rod protested. Bertie Lou put her hands on bis shoulders and looked Into his eyes. "Don't say It that way," shs cautioned him. "It sounds as It yon didn't believe me. And we must never doubt each other again. Or lie. One little lie led to all the trouble we had. But It began before that the night ot our wedding. I asked myself It you loved me. I should have believed that yon wouldn't have married me It you didn't And I should have' kept on be lieving It." Rod took her hands off his shoulders and pressed them to bis lips. "A man never had a sweet er bride, ' ha told her. "but a man's a man, Bertie Lou. And that means that sometimes he's a fool. Only a wise woman can help him then. Ton were too proud and too good." Bertie Lou smiled at him. "Well, try it again," she warned him, "and I'U fight for you like a fishwife." "I think I'll stick to the hearthslde," Rod replied.
