But Bertl Loa would not eoaaenl to hart him tak her to th doctor who had attended her durlnf bar narrout breakdown, ai ho wlahed to doi "Lot's Just atop at tho hospital minute," Marco pleaded when they tot back to the city. "No. no. I'm all right," Ber tie Lou proteated. Marco did not belter her. 6b looked o tor turd, with wild, farerlah light In her ye. and heartbreaking way ol preaalng her finger- tlpa to her Up, a though to keep back a cry of anguish. "You ahonldn't ha com out today," Marco told her reproach fully. "Buying that hone waa too much for you, Bertl Lou. Of coura it' your own affair, but tbat aort of aantlmental In dulgence la worae for yon than tie kind of thing yon aay you won't do any mora." Marco ipok harahly. It an noyed him that Bertie Lou would not take him Into her confidence about the houae. He could gues that It meant something close to her heart. And he was Jealous of her Interests. In reality h was gratified at tb change In her the way ah was turning her back on the drinking. Jailing, youlh-squander-tng life they had been leading. It would give him a itrong factor In faror of his marrlag to her when the time came to talk to his father about it. But he wished that hi reaaon for being pleased was the same a her res: n for changing. Wish ed It had been tor him that ahed'd settled down to lire quiet ly and not tor om secret cause. Jt eauee that had to do with an other man, no doubt. He suspected, of course, that the .man was her husband. The suspicion prodded him to harsh ness. Then, too, he dreaded leav ing Bertl Loa without someone to look after her during the night. He remembered, with a pang of remorse, that It had been be who had made It possible for her to follow the health-wrecking road that leads from pleasure haunt to pleasure haunt. He thought of that day on th train when he'd met her tor the first time. She had been aloof, unwilling to- promise a future meeting. He'd never expected to hear from her again. It waa eaay to guess now. In the fact of his greatest knowledge of her, that she bad been driven by unhapplness to seek his com panionship. She could, he of fered in his own defense, have found another willing courier on her voyage to a hospital cot But and this waa what troubled his conscience there tad been tlmea along the way when her spirit had lagged and her teet had grown weary times when he knew ahe was tired ot the brittle hollowness ot their con tact with a world of Incandescent radiance, mad music, and "don't care," people. Close to her laughter had been honest tear. Her dancing feet had wanted to atop. And Mar co had known It. He admitted, to himself, that he had known It. And now It troubled him that he had nrged her on, piqued her when he could, done every thing. In fact, that he could think ot to keep her going. He had always liked her, from th start of their friendship. He 1 hadn't wanted her to drop out. "You're In no condition to be left alone," he bunt forth cross ly, seeking, In a solicitude for her, to put down his troublesome self searching. Bertie Lou's nerves were begin ning to cover her body with the feel of a fin network ot searing wires. 8h knew what that meant. The hospital cot again. Somehow she must hsng on, must keep calm. Marco had been right. Th emotional crisis she bad under gone In buying the house ot Rod' dreama had upset her. No, It wss Marco himself, with his unending dealr to marry her. She knew better. It wasn't Msrco. It wss her memory. Cam eo clear. Dear Qod, couldn't ahe forget the past) That hot night In her room. So brave she'd been to msrry Lila Marsh's cast oft suitor. Th heat might have com from a crucible wherein burned her chance for happlneas. And then she had only to think a little further to feel Rod' kisae upon har hatr, her eyea, her lips. Sweet, the hour ot youth, ... a Marco was saying something. She would not listen. Why try not to relieve her brief joy when It was Impossible to forget it? Marco would be talking sense, and there was no sense In th world. She could not Ignore him though; ahe must not. It she sank so far Into the past as to forget him entirely -he might lose con sciousness. She felt as It ah could sink Into a stupor from sheer inability to let go her poignant remembrance. Marco would rush her oft to the hospital. If she gained her bed ... by morning she would be better. It had never been quite so bad be forethis looking backward. In duced by Imagination, ot course. She had pictured, too unendur lngly, herself with Rod in th llttl house at Moonflelds. But It muat be dispelled, this mood of black regrets for a dead past. She must not be silly. Per hsps ... It she hsd word ot Rod . . . tomorrow she would do whst she hsd resisted doing many times . . . sbe would tele phone to Cyru Lore. She could disguise her voice ... oh, she would not have him speaking ot It to Lila , . . Lila would carry It to Rod. Cyrna might tell her what Rod was doing. It she pre tended to be a friend from Way-ville. 3he knew Rod was not working for Cyrus. Her mother had told her that much. But no one who would have told her more about him seemed to know. Molly, she was sure, could have given her some lntormstlon hsd she wished. Bertl Lou had suffered over Molly's attitude; It indicated that Rod had made unkind remarks about' her. That wss hard to be lieve, though. Rod bad never been contemptible. Hadn't he though? sine he d fallen under Llla's In fluence. Still. Molly never, had Justin S. "A touch ot homesickness," sh told him. Marco did not Ilk what ah said because he did not be lter It, but he wa too much In lov with her to express his doubt. He knew he hsd no right to his Jealousy, Bertl Lou had never encouraged blm to think she loved him. When he left her at th door ot her rooming nous h gated very earnestly Into her -eyes. Bertie Loa put out a hsnd to say good night Marco took It and did not let It go. "I wish yoi would let m take car ot you," h said. "This Is so dumb. Bertl Lou; your living In a plac Ilk this. "Maybe It Is." Bertl Loa re turned with a wistful smile, "but Just now. Just this minute, Mar co, I'm glad I didn't listen to you." Sh was thinking ot th call sh was going to make th next day the telephone call to Cyrus Lore. There waa no hop of a reconciliation with Rod ahe was not sure that sh could lov th th man Lila had mad ot him as sh bad loved him when he wa her ideal but attll she found a taint measure ot happiness In being unchanged herself; In be ing the same Bertie Loa that Rod had married. A miracl might happen she did not expect It to, but it might. Cyrus could tell her something fin ot Rod. It might b a mis take about him and Lila. It might be. And than ah would b so Indescribably, o delirious ly, hsppy that ah had not said yes to Marco. Sh laughed at herself as b umlresaed for bed, laughed and called heraelt a little fool. It was a sad sound, her laughter. And partly on account of Marco. Bh hated to treat him shabbily, keep him hanging oa until she made up her mind. And she found that under all her sur face denials, and even her Joy la being free to dream Imposalble dream ot a reunion with Rod. there was a feeling ot satisfaction In her heart orer knowing that Marco stood by to take her out ot her hall bedroom whenever she wss ready to tear It.
