"I don't Intend to break bis heart, Rod." ahe aaid. "but he's ' going on a trip next week ..." "My God, Llla haTen't you any ' decency!" Rod cried, breaking entirely free of her clinging arms. His words were like a lash across Llla's face. "I didn't know yoa wars squeamish." ahe fired at him. Ton ought to dlrorca Bertie Lou If yoa think so much ot decency." Rod moved toward the door without ' answering her but she was before him like a darting ' flam and stood with her back against the door handle. "So that got yoa, did it?" she mocked him. "It Isn't so pleasant to bear a troth like that, la It? All right to talk to me about de cency, but how about a man who permits his wife , to fall tor an other man and makes no effort to prevent It?" ' ' Rod fairly trembled with out raged feelings as he stood before her and listened to her scathing denunciation. "Tou'r led me Uto this," ahe went on. "Everyone knowa yoa - don't ear what Bertie Lou does. Well.; why shouldn't yon ear . . . nnlesa yoa wanted to be free to do th same? You're a big fraud with your talk of decency. Llla threw her bead back and closed ber eyes. "You'll hare to make me." she dared. The next Instant ahe waa rudely and yery forcibly thrust aside. When ahe righted herself Rod was gone. But his destination was given no thought la the blind terror thst possessed him. Llla'a words seared like read hot Irons Into bis consciousness. Oh how damnably sure she bed been! Bertie Lou and Marco Palmer! Fool, fool, tool! Could he aee? It wasn't true !God, It wasn't true! e e - He found himself at home. Not one step ot the way be had tra versed remained In his memory. He might hare walked miles or blocks; he couldn't hare told which had he not known the distance. Tha apartment waa unbearable. He went Into Bertl Lou's room. That waa the worst place ot all, with a breaker ot faded rosea on th dresser. . Two hours later Rod waa driv en out ot the place by bis mental torture. Where had he left his hat? Ha started without It, but saw it la the ball and put it on. When he reached the street he hailed a taxlcah. Strangely, the driver knew where the Palmer estate was. "Get me there, and don't let anything stop you," Rod ordered recklessly. "It's some ride, brother," the man returned. He had his doubts ot this wild-eyed fare and he had no relish for a long country drive with no pay at the end of It A tight, maybe. "Get there." Rod flashed back. "It's 10 bucks In advance." Rod dug out the money, hand ed it to the driver and climbed Into th cab. He drove that car with every nerv la his body, straining tor ward for mora speed, now and then speaking to th man at the wheel, urging him to "give It a little gas, man, can't you?" . "Say, what la this, a rare with tha atork?" the driver barked at him tha third time he asked for speed. "I can't afford a ticket, Bo; I've bad tha limit." Rod settled back to endure the rest of the ride in silence. It was daybreak when the driv er turned off the state highway and took the road tq the Palmer country horn far out on the south shore ot Long Island. The house, set a quarter of a mile back on the blue stone driveway, appeared dignified and peaceful In the early morning light. . Most ot the windows were ahut- vsssTjaa. Quicker! SIDE GLANCES By George Clark iii i" "1 1 fi v-i I'd get my sticks back from blm anyway. He'll think that tered, but a few on th second floor showed drawn blinds. There was a wooden door, used to close the house during the family's so journ In tha south or abroad, leaning against an outside wall. Rod understood. Marco waa us ing tha house In his parents' ab sence. 11 Instructed th taxi driver to wait for blm, and walked up to the door to ring. As he reach ed forth his hand be aaw with surprise that the door waa aot on the latch. It awung open a few Inchea and Rod obeyed an Im pulse to enter without ringing. Inside a atranga eight met his eyes. The furniture of th hall waa still shrouded In linen cov ers and the floor waa bar. Top coata and hata were thrown over chairs and on standi. Indicating that Marco had not brought a butler out with him. But those carelessly-placed coata and hata were a welcome alght to Rod. It waa a house party A flood ot relief that soothed him like cool water on a parched tongue swept over him. He strode on into the living room, oblivious ot trespassing; not caring, had It occurred to him. The living room presented a de plorable sight. Th air reeked ot stale tobacco smoke, and count less ash trays, tilled with clgaret ends were everywhere. Trays with teltale glasses, green and brown pinch bottles, with an array of smaller bottles about them like chlcka huddling around a equal hen, decorated the room lavishly. Rod saw a piano with a torn record trailing out ot It like a gigantic ticker tape. The floor waa marked by dancing feet and some ot the covered furniture wss heaped in pilea, or overturned. A few chairs and a davenport near the fireplace had been un covered. On one chair, pinned to the back, waa a corsage of or chids. Rod turned grim at th sight ot It. Bertie Lou and orchids. Did she get so many that ahe cared little for them? But who would think of flowers at a party auch as this must hava been? e Rod struggled bard against tha memory or Llla's words. Had it been his fault that Bertie Lou was receiving orchids? Could he have stopped it 'it he'd tried? But they'd agreed to remember their marriage vows untl they wanted them broken legally. Rod noticed that ha vas wear ing a silken dressing gown and bedroom slippers, Not a bad look ing boy. But what sort was ha to pull a thing like this under his moth- era root, even it ha waa going to marry the girl? Rod'a llpa curled In contempt, but ha went on.
