Be "Wood-Minded" CROM every point of view selfish, altruistic, civic pride or Just cold, hard headed business principles piamath must line up with other lumber producing com munities of the northwest and promote the use of wood; not only pine, but fir, spruce, hemlock and cedar. It is not only a matter of loyalty to an existing Klamath Industry but, it involves the pocket book of every citizen, ' directly and Indirectly. ! George Pearson, Bend, an authority on the subject, revealed yesterday that during a ten year period, from , 1916 to 1925, inclusive, lumber production dropped seven per cent while during the same period the popula tion of tha nation increased 12 per cent and building activities gained 100 per cent. There was just one answer wood substitutes had quietly and effectively moved in on the lumber market and appropriated a large part of the business; produc tion of wooden boxes, for example, dropped from , 6,061,000,000 feet in 1916 to 3,690,000,000 in 1925 or a loss of 2,351,000,000 feet That loss hits Klamath particularly hard for this city is the largest box shook producing center in the world. The cold, unrelenting facts are that the lumber in dustry Is menaced by competition of substitutes. Lum bermen have gone merrily on gradually curtailing pro duction for over ten years without doing much to counteract the successes of their bitterest enemies; lum ber producing communities have persisted in erecting homes constructed mainly of lumber substitutes and mer chants have allowed their products to be shipped in fiber containers without so much as a murmur of protest ' 'At latt th:ro has come an awakening. The lumber Industry has cone to the realization that the old in dividualistic methods can not succeed- any more;, the olid support cf the northwest must be enlisted and loyalty to th . ladustry that accounts for 63 cents out of every payroll dollar in Oregon and Washington must be displayed. No longer has lumber a monopoly on building or boxes; tho lumberman must use salesman ship to sell his products; he must advertise in the news papers and magazines of the land the good qualities of lumber. Klamath Falls must line the northwest and become and advantages of lumber should be a familiar topic on every tongue; pressure should be brought to bear on shippers, to use wooden boxes rather than the frailer lcard board containers and more homes of wood should 'be constructed. ! The lumber industry needs help and certainly the first places to offer that help should be communities whose existence and prosperity is materially dependent on the lumber payroll.
