a young man named Lindbergh came
along Dick was pretty generally
considered the country's leading
aviator and he apparently Intends
to regain that distinction In the near
future, having a flight to the south

of spanning the Atlantic Is over.
Then there la Harry. - To the
nation at large he isdeas well known
than Dick but not to Virginia. In

Flood Byrd la the governor ot -the
state and la counted a very good
one and a very popular one, too. In
Virginia the name Byrd does not by
any means mean simply the man who
flew over the north pole.
Finally there la Tom. The coun
try at large knows him not at all.

A "World War Hero
Tom is of the Introspective, con
templative type. Lacking the flare
for direct action that motivates Dick
and Harry, hit career has been, on
the whole, quiet and obscure. Tet
in 117, when the call to arms came,
Tom was one of the first sons of the
Old Dominion to volunteer. Ho
served well In France, making a
record for bravery and fidelity to
duty under fire.
When the war ended he retired to
the quiet ot his country estate in the
Shenandoah valley, tending his peach
and pear orchards, enjoying life
hugely and emerging from hit re
tirement occasionally to congratulate
one or the other ot his brothers lor
some new achievement.

was his wife, their grandmother,
Mrs. Jane Byrd, who is still living
and who is prouder than she can
say of her three grandsons.

She and William Byrd had been
married just two years - when the
Civil War broke out. Byrd had
brought her to Virginia from Texaa.

covered wagon from Tennessee. She
had known frontier life, and her
beauty and' charm made her an or
nament to the Byrd plantation at
Winchester, Va. She saw her hus
band and her two brothers enlist.
The two brothers were killed.
William Byrd was listed at misting
in action, and when month after
month passed and no word ot him
came It waa thought that he, too,
had been slain; but the young wife
refused to believe it.
-At length the war ended. Still
there was no word of Byrd. . Then,
one day, he came riding up to the
plantation, dismounted, and asked
gravely, "Does the Widow Byrd
live here?"
It developed that he had been
wounded, had been captured by
Federal soldiers and had been con
fined in a military prison at New
Orleans, nnable to communicate with
hit home.

The three were always of different
type, the says; Harry was ever
studious and grave, Dick venture
tome and light-hearted, and Tom
quiet and Introspective. She la

and oh, ever so proud of Dick.
"Thar boy la a case," she says.
"I hope he writes a book some day,
because he certainly has had a lot
ot fun and it would be a shame to
keep It all to himself."
There, then. Is the country's most
famous Tom, Dick and Harry. It
isn't bard to understand why. In
Virginia, that trio of names doesn't
make just a tlang expression. It
refers to three brothers of whom
Virginia it justifiably proud.
