Ac cording to reports he stands a good chance for complete recovery from the terrific blow on the head by some unknown assailant. Latest development in the Pecholt case, is the report from authentic source that Bert Schultz and his com panion, a man named Col well, saw Pecholt struck over the head with either a sap or a revolver, a week ago last Saturday night on Spring street. Neither Col well nor Schultz would make a statement today. Pierce Takes Hand It is also reported that Governor Pierce has been informed of the matter and has issued instructions that no further information con cerning the alleged attack on Pecholt, be given out to the public, until a further investigation of the matter be effected. (By The Associated Press.) President Cool idge informed congress in bis annual budget message today that the mini mum cost of running the government, had been about reached, and that the normal expansion of a growing nation would henceforth involve ad ded expenditure to keep the govern ment machinery in motion. The budget estimates, transmitted with the message, reflected th'e con tinuing efforts at economy, Mr. Cool idgc said, adding that on the basis of the calculations a surplus of some $330,307,000 was indicated for the fiscal year. 1927. He xepects a sur plus of $202, 041. TBS for the year ending next June 30 although a year ago it was estimated that the sur plus this year would exceed $373, 000,000. To Keiluce Taxes The executive made a formal re commendation for reduction of the taxes; suggested a necessity for keep ing the airplane industry alive as well ns replenishing the refitting the government air service equipment and developing an "orderly policy" In the air; and declared that "every available resource of the government will be employed in prohibition en forcement." He thought the total estimates of $42,147,000 for the com bined air services should accomplish the ends sought. About December 18th the Boy Scouts will start a canvass of the city, picking up clothing which fam ilies are donating to the worthy cause. Chest Fund boxes will be placed in Moe's store. OPEN OP EXPERT YEGGS GET M S Robbers Find Only $10.85 After They do Good Job on Strong Box NO CLUES UNEARTHED Officers Declare work to Have Been done by Pro fessional Boxmen A large and durable safe of the City Creamery, 202 Spring street, was blown open some time last night by yeggs, and yielded but $10.85. The safe-crackers made good their escape, and so far as police can ascer tain no person saw them en ter the building or heard the explosion of the safe. It was a job of profession al safe crackers, officers ad judged this morning after a brief examination. No trace of a finger print on the safe was detected bv a imver j print expert who was on the scene ot the crime shortly alter it was discovered. A Total Wreck The safe, valued at between $125 and $150, was a total wreck. Tile door was blown off and twisted out of shape. Little of the contents Of the safe, records and books, were ' destroyed. The small -amount of cash was kept ia a drawer in the interior of tho safe. The yeggs entered the Creamery through a rear window, passed through the rear rooms Into the front part of the store and entered the front office. They then pro ceeded to prepare for the blowing of the safe. With soap, crushed Into a putty-like consistency, they filled in the' cracks of tho safe door, leaving only one corner open. (JP) The Southern Pacific Railroad com pany was authorized by the Inter state Commerce Commission today to fix rates on autos moving from San Francisco Day points to Port land, Ore., on tho basis of 12 5 pev cent of the rates maintained by tho steamship lines for the same ser vice. At tho same time the rail road was permitted to maintain higher rates for automobiles to lnlerr mediate points on the same line. Youth Near Death in Skidding Auto SALEM, Ore. Dec. 9.- I-clati'.! Carl, 10. of Hubbard, suffered in juries that may provo fatal shortly before 10 o'clock this morulng when a light roadster he was driving skid ded from the pavomont, turned com pletely ovor in the ditch and then righted Itself.
