Ray K renter Goes Back to Factory When Ruy Kremer n turna to the Pacific coast this winter he will re ceive a warm welcome from his friends and former associates of the Star factory. The big pitcher, who did more thun any one other player to land the world Serb s for the Pitts burg Pirates year, is duo buck 111 Oakland In a, few weeks. Ills ar rival here will be tho Hlenal for a lot of activities on the part of tho Du rant Motor company of California officials. Martin Heath of department 50, the motor assembly department in which Kremer worked, while associ ated with the Star plain, ,ruu al ready arranged for a barbecue to be held in Dublin canyon in Kremer's honor. This banquet will be attended by the men who worked with Kre mer, by the officials of the Iterant company plant here and by Kremer's friends In the Oakland Coast loagoe team In which he played before Pitta burgh drafted him two years ago. Kremer made many friends at the Star factory' during bfs period of aorvlcw there. These friends follow ed his career with the' Oaks enthus iastically and have wafched his pro gress in the niujor league since his departure from the coast. When Hi.- big fpllow had his chance In this year's world series aud when he proved himself the outstand ing star of the Pirate team bypltch ing them to victory and die pennant, there was wild onthusiasm at the Star factory. Martin Heath sent num erous wires Oe congratulation on be half of his associates and informed Kremer that "a big party in the can yon" was awaiting the baseball hero on his return to California. H'tO jSbg" J Studebaker Auto Is Amazing France "nut, Messieurs, It Is Impossible; It cannot be that you can do It when you manufacture so muny cars:" Though Ihey saw the task being performed us a regular, routine part of automobile building, tho engineer ing staff of the foremost French mo tor car manufacturer, could not be- llve that American manufacture in quantity could do nuch careful work. They were wutchlng a deft-finger girl In the Studebaker factory at South Rend, Ind,, grading connect ing rods. They saw her put tbem lengthwise, on a special balancing scale and sort tnem into sets of six, each being matched for weight. Each set was for one particular engine. The object was to make sure that when fastened to the perfectly bal anced crankshaft, machined on all sides to obtain inherent balance, one connecting rod would not be heavier than the others and thus unbalance the assembly, even by a small amount. , The French engineers, who had the impression American manufac turers Just stamped out automobiles with a punch press, were amazed to learn that such Infinite palna were resorted to, that the product should be as near mechanically perfect as Ingenuity could devise. Nor did their surprise lessen when they learned that 1200 separate In spectors made more than 30,000 in dividual inspections before a Stude baker car ran off the assembly line completed. Nothing like this, they de clared existed In Europe, even in custom built car factories. Nor could they understand how a manufacturer could afford it, nntll they were shown that it was paid for out of the savings which other wise would have gone as profits to parts makers. This company manu factures all the vital parts of Its automobile which is what Studebak er means by "one profit" manufac -ture. YORKSHIRE VILLAGE DESTIN ED FOR BOTTOM OF SEA KILN3EA, Eng.
