Yet, the reclamation service wants to keep a controlling hand upon the af fairs of the district when the operation and maintenance is turned over to the farmers. There is only one way to keep the reclamation rats out of the district granary and that it to elect Short and Jacob. MAKE A CLEAN SWEEP OF IT The water users of the Klamath Irrigation district are urged to go to the polls tomorrow and make a clean sweep of the influence of the reclamation service, the California Oregon Power company and the Southern Pacific in the affairs of the district. During the past! year the directors who were elected last year have Wprked earnestly in behalf of the welfare of the project ' and they have made splendid progress. One of the' handicaps under which they have worked has been the J representation to the department of the interior that last I year's election was an accident and that this year con- i trol of the board would be regained and once more the ! senger a',J ,relKht i ft u t- TiZ j- a: ; Western Pacific at Port voice oi uie reclamation service wouiu oe uie aarecung power in the affaire of the district. There is no ques tion about the election of Short and Jacob, but they want to be placed on the board by such a vote as to clearly show to the government that there is no accident about it and that it is the will of the people that this project is to be operated in the interest of those who pay the bill and not in that of the California Oregon Power company or the Southern Pacific company. By the election of Jacob and Short, the reclamation service will be shown that this district never will sign a contract that contains paragraph 3S; that the people own the water and that thev are eoine- to keen it: that the surplus water must be paid for by the Calif ornia i grey xe" n, TT" ? When the campaign was planned by the reclamation service to secure control of the Klamath Irrigation dis trict and enable it to turn over to the California Oregon Power company the water rights of the farmers, it is tmiinnr illrp-irl to li:ivn hfen m:uli liv ('ommis- sioner Mead. The purpose of that statement was to prejudice the farmers against the present board and pre vent the election of Jacob and Short. But the thing was so raw that they were forced to deny that any such statement had been issued and finally to hide themselves behind the cowardly and threadbare claim that the news paper had misquoted them. But Uie people know, and the reclamation service will get its answer tomorrow by ihe overwhelming election of Jacob and Short. mm MEETING (Continued Prom Page Ono) FROM ALL OVER OREGON Bits of News From Towns Throughout the State i ? Mr. Berry has been engaged the past summer in establishing his fox people been so nearly unanimous in their determination to gain their rights. They seem to, sense that at least they are going to secure justice and that the reign of the California Oregon Power company in the affairs of the district is at an end. For nearly twenty years the district has been plundered by a gang of taxeating car petbaggers, whose only interest seemed to have been the maintenance of the bureaucratic traditions of the re clamation service, the punishment of those who dared to oppose their vicious practices and an absolute disre gard as to the amount of expense they piled upon the backs of the farmers. This year the permanent change will come. The peo ple's representatives will be in control. The wild extrav agances will be stopped. The free distribution of the assets of the district to the California Oregon Power company will be stayed. Control of the district will pass to the farmers without the departmental strings that the reclamation , service want to attach to it. The people will rule and they will control their own affairs in their own interest. Vote for Jacob and Short and see that your neighbor does, also. LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE The Klamath News, that journalistic Judas, must bear the brand of Ananias for all time through its failure to come forward and prove its charge that any part of the Evening Herald was owned by Charles Wood Eberlein, or anyone else. We would, indeed, be glad to have associated with us a gentleman of Mr. Eberlein's ability and integrity. But that is not the point at issue. The Klamath News deliberately lied and repeated the un truth even after our offer to pay $5000 to any Klamath county charity. Not only did it misrepresent the facts in this instance, but did so throughout the campaign, and yet it asks the people of the district to believe that it is working in their interest. We know M ho is pulling the "wires." And it is not the farmers of the Klamath Ir rigation district. A recent advertisement of the California Power company, (not printed in this naner. however) is headed: "Why does a public utility need money?" Our answer, based on a survey of local conditions, would be as follows: "To run a newspaper." REACHES HALF WAY HARK The Community Chest drive reach ed the half-wary mark with the re ports made last night, while there is still considerable money due from other committees. W. 0. dinger's committee, which has many of the leading business of Cass street to solicit, has not yet made its report and when that money comes in, it is expected that the total receipts will be near the $6,000 mark. Archie Crawford's team at last night's rCport was leading with sub scription of J 1,723. V. T. Jackson';: workers were second with $1,690. SO O. C. Baker's squad has completed only about one-half Its vanvas, owing to the fact that -Mr. Bakor was out of town when the drive 3tarted. Its first day's work netted $7.r,9.8.",, bringing the total receipts up to $4,173.80. W. O. Clinger'3 team is sard at wcrk today and will make its re port tonight. The bag ends of the drive in the business districts arc now be ing drawn in. It is the aim of the iworkors to complete the can vass in the business section before entering the residential districts. I Indications' are that the start of the last lap of the drive will find Oregon I the fund almost two-thirds com pleted, as the work In too busi ness section Is meeting with such excellent results. Roseburg ISewn. Klamath Falls, Ore., Nov. I. 1925. Mr. E. J. Murray, Publisher, Eve ning Herald. Dear Mr. Murray: In your editorial of this date you make the statement; "This will be the first year In which Hie tax roll of tho district was prepared In the district office, the work heretofore having been done by the reclamation service." Evidently you have been mla-ln- formod for the fnct Is that tho tax roll has always been prepared In the district office, and nover In the of fice of the reclamation service. As I personally prepared all rolls for the seven years since the formation of the district, may I take tho liberty of requesting that you correct this statement. Sincerely yours, A. I,. WIsliARD. One of the provisions that the reclamation service wants to insert in the O. & M. contract, makes it obliga tory for the district to employ as manager of the pro ject, a man who has had at least three years' experience in charge of reclamation works, and he must" be ap proved by the secretary of the interior. In other words, the control of the project by the farmers would be a myth. The only control the government should have would be exercised when the district failed to pay any installment. When the government is paid in full, its yoice in the affairs of the district must cease entirely. TO THE WATER If BURS OF THE KLAMATH IHIUGATION DISTRICT There has appeared In print a statement from Mr. A. L. Wlshard to the effect that ho Is not a can didate for the office of secretary of the Klamath Irrigation district. I understand Mr. Wlshard is now in the real cstato business In which he Is meeting with commendable suc cess. In view of this and my firm belief thnt Mr. Wlshard will prefer to remain where he is so successful, I will not, if elected to the board of directors of the Klamath Irrigation district, consider Mr. - Wlshard for the office of secretary and 1 wish this statement to be accepted, not ns a reflection for Mr.' Wlshurd, for whom I have a high regard, but as comini: through my belief In the sin cerity of his stntement that he will not accept tho office.
