EVENING HERALD, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Wednesday, October 14, 1925 .THE REAL ISSUE IN THE SHENANDOAH INQUIRY Mrs. Margaret Ross Landsdowne, the widow of Zach ary Landsdowne, commander of the ill-fated . :Shenan doah, was a witness yesterday before the naval commit tee investigating the disaster. Therein she repeated her charge that the commander had opposed the ship's last trip ; that he was afraid that trouble would come; and that he believed, as a matter of general policy, that the activities of the dirigible should be confined to tests that would have some con nection with national defense, and not sent off on ali soils of wild goose chases, the primary purpose of which was propaganda for the navy department. But his protest was in vain; the journey was under taken; and as a result the lives of fourteen of the na tion's uniformed men were secrificed. One of the most tragic incidents of the inquiry has been the persistent effort to shift the blame for the disaster to Commander Landsdowne himself. But there is something ghoulish in the attempts of some of the higher officers of the department to be little a man, who gave his life in the line of duty, in order that public attention may be deflected from their own shortcomings. But the record is too plain. Not only is there the impressive testimony of the widow of the commander herself, but the correspondence shows that the whole venture was conceived and put into action for political purposes only. This fair must be recahed on a certain date; that ex hibition must be visited on another day. The populace must be impressed. The taxpayers must be bamboozled. The citizenry must be made to throw their hats in the an and hurrah for the navy department. To that safety was sacrificed, warnings disregarded, the real good of the navy made of secondary considera tion, for what business had a navy dirigible flying over the Middle West, anyhow? Is our navy a lan dor water force? - Mistakes may have been made in handling the ship. But that does not detract from the fact that had the advice of a skilled flyer been taken, and not the orders of swivel-chair officers in Washington been followed, the Shenandoah would hot have been lost and those fourteen brave, men would not to-day be mouldering in the ground. The investigating committee will make a shameful mistake if, in its findings, it glosses over or seeks to shift to dead men a responsibility that lies on the should ers of those still living and still having authority to make just as foolish and fatal mistakes Sacramento Bee.
