May Cancel Lease on Lumber Mill, North Bend NORTH BEND, Unless the pre sent lessee of the Willamette-Pacific Lumber company plant in North Bend starts immediate operation of the plant, the Southern Pacific, owner of the property, will take steps to cancel the lease. This was recently announced by E. L. King, district superintendent. The lease is held by Mr. McCall. who purchased it at bankrupt sale, but has never operated it. The plant has been idle for several months. "If McCall does not begin opera tions soon, the Southern Pacific will cancel the lease and turn the prop erty over to someone who will run it," said King. The plant will employ between SO and 100 persons. McCall is expected in North Bend tomorrow. Anderson and Middleton Co. of Oregon, Cottage Grove, shut down for a week beginning September 14. on account of lack of logs, due to a fire in the company's logging operations. Jaenlcke. national forest entomologist for the North Pacific district, and M. W. Stone of Tnroma. Wash., were in Bond this morning and expected to leave today for the pine timber country near the head of the Meiolius river and iu the (liven Itidge country, where they will make an inspection of the pine beetle infestation to de termine whether or not control mea sures will be necessary this winter. Walt Perry, local lumberman, and A. D. Cannaviiia. forest ranger, will be members of the pany also. Inspections made by Jaenirke, Stone and t'annavina last spring showed that a large number of the pine beetles in the Metolius country had been killed by the (old weather of the past winter and it was thought that control measures would not be neceBsary. At that time an inspection trip was planned for this fall. After cruising several sections of timber, data on the extent of dam age done by the beetles this sum mer will be compiled to determine whether or not the forest service will do beetle control work during the coming winter. u 1!) The hearing will be held In ac cordance with the ruling of the United States supreme court, which reversed the order of the depart ment of public works, establishing uniform rates on the larger lines of the state because it was held that the proper method had not been pursued in arriving at the rates. The state courts were also reversed in the high court ruling arid the case remanded back for further consideration by the department. Logging Cars Kill Resident of Bend BEND. Ore. Called to the Bend country less than one year ago to at tend the funeral of his biother who had been killed in an accident, Alvln H. Pritchard, 52, is dead in this city, also the result of an accident. Asa L. Pritchard, his brother, died when a long string of moving log ging cars were backed against the car under which he was working. Alvin H. Pritchard died Sunday af ternoon from injuries received when a "high line" toppled limbs of a pine tree on him. Both men were working for the Shevlin - Hixon com pany when injured. Edwin Sho:;:rom. brother of Mrs. George Miller, who has been em ployed at the machine shops for the past year, left Tuesday by auto for Portland and other points. He may go as far north as Prince. Ru pert, B. C. He was accompanied as far as Longvlew, Wash., by Edwin Miller. Dr. R. D. Russell of Yreka, super visor over Rural school districts, was a camp visitor Tuesday and Wednesday. Dr. Ru:-sell praised our school, and said we have one of the very best in the county, most efficient teachers and the nicest pupils.
