Aug. 27. (,T) Fred G. Nickol. prominent manu facturer and confessed phantom bandit who held up the North Pay ton Branch of the Dayton Baring! and Trust company two weeks ago and obtained $21,000 today declared his friends were partially respon sible for' his downfall. Seven social organizations in Salem high school, said by the board to be se cret societies, were abolished by action of the Salem school board here last night. All students enter ing high school next year will be required to sign written statements "declaring that they do not belong to any of the organizations. The statements must also be signed by parents or guardians. The rulings will he enforced by suspension or expulsion for non compliance, it was stated by school officials this morning. (Special) Con struction of additional covered seat ing space is under way on Hayward field. The A. Pajuncn construction company of Portland is in charge of the work, which will cost between $20,000 and $30,000. The build ing project, will be completed be fore the first football game of tbe season, with Multnomah club of Portland, on October 3, according to the plans of J. W. Benefiel, grad uate manager of the Associated Students. With the completion of the new covered bleachers, seating capacity under cover for 13,500 will be pro vided, with room for approximately 5,000 on the remaining uncovered bleachers.
